Hogue explains that all credibility for any list of fake prophecies plummets because forecasts published “after” the event are always perfect while those awaiting fulfillment in the future have an accuracy average often far below mere chance.

Though no longer 100 percent on the mark, the 36 mottoes foretelling the fates of pontiffs after the mid-1590s leading up to the current reign of Pope Francis remain remarkably accurate. They are 80-to-90 percent and become clearer as the list counts down to the final pontiffs overseeing the Holy Roman Catholic Church in the turbulent to potentially apocalyptic twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

ANOTHER GREAT READ - BE YOU OF CATHOLIC FAITH OR NOT!!!!

Having been raised Catholic and having attended 12 years of Catholic school, I do not remember being taught anything about the Popes during my school years 1955-1967. I do remember memorizing a catechism without having the faintest idea what anything really meant. However, looking back, the Catholic Church did prepare me to discover my own personal INNER JOURNEY to find God. This was thanks to every GOOD FRIDAY when I observed three hours of silence in the solitude of my darkened church save for the flickering votive candles. Those three hours were mine with God as nobody would dare speak or disturb another's religious reverie. All of that changed when I graduated into a world no longer shielded by priests, nuns and friends who all thought the same as I did. Life soon took me into a new direction. Even though I am now I am of a non-denominational belief system, when I saw newly elected Pope Francis make his first appearance, I didn't see a Catholic Pope - I saw a very special person, who gave off a very UNIQUE energy, so much so that I knew I was going to keep an eye on what he had to say in the future. I didn't feel he was elected Pope to just serve Catholics - he felt more Universal to me - much like the first time I was introduced to Buddhism and heard the Dalai Lama speak. -- Fast Forward to why I highly recommend this book! When I caught Pope Francis on tv meeting with the President and Congress, I was hooked. I did not turn off CNN until the Pope's plane left for Rome! Tears would stream down my face whenever that man smiled or interacted with the people! Once again, I didn't see him as a Pope - I just saw this incredible human being who exuded such beauty that I wanted to be a better person! However, with these unexplainable tears came unsettled feelings of fear where I knew I wanted to pray for this man before he even requested everyone pray for him. Throughout the Pope's visit, I kept wondering if John Hogue was watching and what was he thinking! Not soon after the Pope departed, I saw John's newest ebook appear with Pope Francis on the cover! Incredible timing! -- As much as I wanted to jump straight to the chapters about Pope Francis, I'm glad I didn't do that. The first five chapters were a history lesson about the Popes that I never received all those years in Catholic school. I found myself agreeing with many things John wrote, while knowing that others of my birth faith might not be too happy to read what was on some of those pages. It is why I find that an OPEN MIND is so important when reading whatever John writes! From Chapter Six to the end, I became transported. For me, this is where writings of the Pope prophecies by St. Malachy or possibly by others ended, and it is where John Hogue begins - flesh and blood John Hogue, who is fearless when it comes to sharing what comes from WITHIN him! I will read and reread those chapters many times because they resonated so strongly with me!!!! -- As always, I appreciate that John does all that he does to share his gifts with us - while being a full time caregiver to his beautiful mother and being given the same 24 hours in a day as the rest of us! THANK YOU, JOHN!

John Hogue updates us on the St. Malachy and Nostradamus Papal Predictions!

John Hogue does it again! This is a great little book that picks up where John's larger works on the prophecies of Saint Malachy and Nostradamus concerning the Papacy and brings us forward in time to the present in 2015 including the unusual election of Pope Fancies while the previous Pope is still alive, although living in retirement.

John looks at these recent events in the light of various prophetic traditions that concern the Papacy and the possible outcomes for the future contained in them.

He also gives a great over-view of some his previous material on the "St. Malachy" predictions (hits and misses) on the previous Popes that provides the reader with some of the background for his more current updates and information.

For new readers, his book also includes sample chapters of some of his other current works that can also be purchased for Kindle or read on Kindle Unlimited.

Overall a good read, I could not put it down and read it all in one sitting!

A little book that deals with a big subject

Will Pope Francis be the final pope? Will the years of his pontificate be the years of tribulation that lead to the Apocalypse and God's final judgement of humanity?

Those are the questions addressed by prophecy scholar John Hogue in his book: Francis and the Last Pope Prophecies of St. Malachy. This book is a primer on evaluating the St. Malachy Prophecies that count down the popes to the Apocalypse. In it, Mr. Hogue also points out the controversies and contradictions of the Roman Catholic Church, the pageantry and ritual of the pope selection process, and the portents that accompanied that process for the current Pope Francis (formally Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio). He also points out how many of our ideas about Jesus and Christianity (the virgin birth, a bearded Jesus, celibacy for priests, even the resurrection) are the results of the "Romanization" of Christianity. This is interesting material in itself and it provides a context for the St. Malachy material that should help the discerning reader decide whether Pope Francis is indeed the last pope before the End Times kick in.

Mr. Hogue's book examines an old document of "111 mysterious Latin mottoes followed by an apocalyptic coda forecasting the succession of popes unto Judgment Day." Legend says it was produced from the ecstatic utterances of St. Malachy (an Irish Prelate) around 1140 when he arrived at Rome at the end of a pilgrimage. Malachy gave his prophecies to the pope of that time, Innocent II, who then stored them in the Vatican vaults where they stayed until they were rediscovered in the late 16th century. Mr. Hogue points out that the first 76 mottoes are 100 percent accurate in describing those popes before 1595. He believes these were written after the fact, "sometime after 1557." That makes the remaining 35 mottoes to be actual attempts at foretelling the future, and as such, they are remarkable. Mr. Hogue judges them to have a "success rate" of about 89 percent at identifying future popes (relative to 1557 or so).

St. Malachy's (or whomever's) mottoes are just that--short phrases seldom more than three words in length. For example, #79 reads in English, "A Perverse People" and #83 reads, "Guardian of the Mountains." Each is supposed to identify the specific pope for that point in the succession of popes from St. Peter (although whether #1 actually identifies St. Peter, the disciple of Christ, is not noted). The identification of a given pope is derived from the associated motto by considering 11 prophetic clues. One or more of them should work to explain how the motto uniquely fits the man elected pope. Mr. Hogue explains this process in chapters Two and Four.

In chapter Two, Mr. Hogue lists the prophetic clues and gives examples of how they work with the mottoes to identify popes. In Chapter Four, he takes each of the 35 genuinely prophetic mottoes, starting with #77 ("A Roman Cross" identifying Clement VIII 1592-1605), and describes how they identify (a hit) or fail to identify (a miss) the associated pope. He goes all the way to #111 ("From the Glory of the Olive" identifying Benedict XVI 2005-?). The last motto is actually a paragraph coda that identifies the final pope. These chapters make for a compelling read. Mr. Hogue's knowledge of prophecy, history, and Latin lend credence to his examination of the mottoes. The many hits and few misses he describes should leave all but the most skeptical of readers with an appreciation for the outstanding nature of the St. Malachy document.

In chapters Five through Eight, Mr. Hogue offers some discussion on the pontificates of the latest popes, Catholic vs non-Catholic ideas about the Apocalypse, some positive thoughts about Pope Francis and whether Nostradamus identified him. In Chapter Nine, he gets to the main question: Is Pope Francis the last pope?

I won't give away Mr. Hogue's answer, but in considering it, you should bear in mind the fluid nature of prophecy and precognition. Seers may be seeing a particular future happening, but these events can change if factors leading up to them change, such as enough desire to make sure they don't happen. From such come prophetic misses, making the accuracy of the St. Malachy prophecies all the more amazing. It would seem that only a few men with destinies to be pope, didn't make it.

So if we're dealing with some real prophecy here, what do we make of it? It seems to me that the preponderance of the world's prophetic literature comes down to a time of unprecedented calamity followed by either human extinction or a turn to enlightened, sustainable living on the earth. The importance of the St. Malachy prophecies is that they seem to provide a specific time for this final time. The countdown of popes is a pretty definite clock and it is lent much credence from just being so accurate. Hence, the importance of this book that presents that timeline in its historic and prophetic context. It is another validation that we are living at a hugely momentous point in the long human drama.

Francis and the Last Pope Prophecies of St. Malachy is a little book that deals with a big subject, namely, the fate of humanity. For if the seer behind St. Malachy's prophecies has it right, we've reached the end of history: Yeshua will return to set us straight, or we'll pass through the fire that will prompt us to set ourselves straight, or we'll go extinct. Such are the ponderings prompted by prophecies, the events of our time, and whether Pope Francis is the last pope.

A bit off beat in its reading-out-loud rhythm

I have to say that I am surprised that this is by the same author that wrote Giraffes can't Dance, which is a fantastic rhyming picture book. Commotion in the Ocean is a bit off beat in its reading-out-loud rhythm and seems to have not been edited well. My kids seems to like it well enough but I do not look forward to reading it.

About the Author

Colin Little studied zoology at Cambridge University, and stayed on to do a Ph.D. on snail physiology. Then he migrated to Miami, USA, where he worked at the Institute of Marine Science, University of Miami, and first encountered the (at the time little-known) phylum Pogonophora. This provided his conversion to marine biology, and he returned to the University of Bristol, England and began to study the biology of the Severn Estuary as well as the brackish-water ecology of coastal lagoons. Running marine field courses and teaching estuarine and marine biology became major interests. He started to do research at Lough Hyne, Ireland, about 30 years ago, and there he began to concentrate on the biology of limpets and long-term intertidal monitoring. He is now retired, but continues these monitoring studies.
Gray A. Williams spent many of his childhood summers messing around on the shores of South Wales. He enjoyed it so much, he decided to make a career of it and studied Biology at the University of Manchester, UK. After graduation, he studied for a PhD at the University of Bristol, investigating the relationship between littorinid snails and their host algae. During this time, he was lucky enough to be introduced to Lough Hyne, Ireland which stimulated his interest in the foraging behaviour of marine gastropods. He continued his work on littorinids as a Post Doctoral Fellow at Port Erin Marine Laboratory, Liverpool University, before joining The University of Hong Kong to work at The Swire Institute of Marine Science, which he currently runs. In his time at Hong Kong he has supervised > 30 higher degree students and teaches courses on coastal ecology. His present research focuses on thermal stress and its impact on the behaviour and physiology of intertidal grazers. Cynthia D. Trowbridge has been fascinated with tidepools, beach drift and marine life for the past forty years. Her educational background includes a B.A. from Cornell University and a Ph.D. from Oregon State University. She has conducted ecological research on herbivore-seaweed interactions in nine countries, including her current work in the UK, Ireland and Japan. Her specialties include the feeding ecology of herbivorous sea slugs and the problem of invasive seaweeds. She teaches marine-oriented field courses for university students, state park staff, and the general public. Cynthia is the currently serving as the Managing Editor of the American Malacological Bulletin.

About the Author
Kirk Havens was born in Vienna, Virginia and received his B.S. in Biology (1981) and M.S. in Oceanography (1987) from Old Dominion University and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Public Policy (1996) from George Mason University.

He is a Research Associate Professor, Director of the Coastal Watersheds Program, and Asst. Director of the Center for Coastal Resources Management at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. He also serves as a collaborating partner in the College of William & Mary School of Law Virginia Coastal Policy Clinic. His research has spanned topics as diverse as hormonal activity in blue crabs to tracking black bears and panthers using helicopters and thermal imaging equipment. His present work involves coastal wetlands ecology, microplastics, marine debris, derelict fishing gear, and adaptive management processes. He hosts the VIMS event “A Healthy Bay for Healthy Kids: Cooking with the First Lady” and the public service program “Chesapeake Bay Watch with Dr. Kirk Havens”.

He is Chair of the Chesapeake Bay Partnership’s Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee. He was originally appointed to STAC by Gov. Warner and was re-appointed by Gov. Kaine, Gov. McDonnell, and Gov. McAuliffe. He was also appointed by North Carolina Gov. Perdue to serve on the Executive Policy Board for the North Carolina Albemarle Pamlico National Estuary Partnership and is presently vice-chair. He serves on the Board of Directors and is past Board Chair of the nonprofit American Canoe Association, the Nation’s largest and oldest (est. 1880) organization dedicated to paddlesports with 40,000 members in every state and 38 countries.

Ed Sharp was born in Uniontown, PA, attended Wheeling College and John Carroll University and received the Ph.D. degree from Texas A&M University in 1966. He conducted basic research in the area of applied nonlinear optics at the U. S. Army Night Vision & Electro-Optics Laboratory and the U. S. Army Research Laboratory. Presently he is working as a consultant on the use of infrared imaging equipment in novel application areas. His major areas of interest include laser crystal physics, thermal imaging materials and devices, electro-optic and nonlinear-optical processes in organic materials, beam-control devices, optical solitons, harmonic generation, optical processing, holographic storage, photorefractive effects in ferroelectric materials and the study of animal ecology using thermal imaging equipment. He is the author or co-author of more than 100 technical publications and holds over 15 patents on optical materials and devices. He is a member of the American Optical Society. Presently he has been working on new methods for using thermal imaging to address issues related to animal ecology and natural resource studies with faculty at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), College of William & Mary.

Gradle takes the best parts of Ant and Maven and adds the ability to automate the delivery pipeline the way you want.

I first heard about Gradle in a session at JavaOne where one of the presenters was Hans Dockter (founder of Gradle). Hans kept on repeating that you should use Gradle to implement automation the way you need it to be done, not just as a straight translation from Ant or Maven. I found that concept intriguing. So I started reading this book ...

My background: I've used Ant and Maven for years, but I had no previous exposure to Groovy.

I found that this book provides excellent coverage of Gradle and how it can be used across a Continuous Delivery pipeline. I was satisfied with the level that the author covered the various topics. He never went too deep into a subject, and when he stopped the discussion he always provided a link to where I could find additional information.

Here are some of the aspects of the book I enjoyed:

* The presentation style is very similar to a programming book. Which makes sense since Gradle is a DSL in Groovy.

* I liked the mild introductions to various concepts (Project Automation, Build Tools, Dependency Management, Automated Testing, Continuous Integration/Delivery).

* The source code is available in a Git repository (updates are as simple as a "git pull" command).

* He uses a common "ToDo" project throughout the book, updating the project as it applies to the subject being covered.

* Exposure to other tools in the examples (Junit, TestNG, Spock, CloudBees, Jenkins, ...). In chapter 8 you create a plugin to publish a WAR file to the Cloud (CloudBees). In Chapter 13 you are lead through the process of building the ToDo project with Jenkins, which I thought was AWESOME!

* The Appendix on Groovy was short, yet in depth enough to understand the Gradle syntax. The author also suggests looking at the DZone cheat sheet for Groovy.

* While reading the book I came across an interesting article about using Gradle for JavaScript builds (DZone Article: JavaScript Webapps with Gradle). Even after only reading about a third of the book, I had been exposed to enough Gradle to understand the article.

I think this book is a good addition to my library.

I was a little disappointed in this book. I buy a lot of manning books and this just didn't measure up to the standard I've come to expect.
My biggest complaint was it was very difficult to find the technical details you need to actually use Gradle.
He talks endlessly about Gradle without giving you the raw technical details you need to really use it.
I would read about Gradle concepts but then to actually use them I had to Google them to get real usable information.
The other thing the bothered me is he would present "examples" that were incomprehensible then tell you "don't worry if you don't understand this" and never explain it. I'm reading the book to gain understanding - why give examples that don't lead to greater understanding?
I found there were cases that after I Googled it and found how to accomplish a task, I went back and re-read the chapter and discovered he had actually give the information - it just wasn't presented in a manner that was usable for someone who didn't already know how to use it.

A good addition to your reference library

Overall I found 'Gradle in Action' to be very helpful.

The book covers all aspects of software development and is a good reference book to have in your library if you are planning to write and/or are managing gradle based builds for your company or team. It explains how gradle can play a part in every aspect of software development cycle from using IDE, to compilation, to unit-testing and integration test, to releasing versions of code all the way to managing infrastructure to push code to servers. Consider this book as a tool to get you going. It gives a good foundation which you can apply to solve your project's specific issues.

I have been using Gradle for project builds for about a year now and I have had my challenges with Gradle. There are times when I needed to get a specific task done and could not figure the recommended way to achieve it i.e. should one use dependsOn or doLast. The documentation seems too vast to figure.

'Gradle in Action' is comprehensive and well laid out. It gives a ground up view of the Gradle tooling. It starts with the basics of the gradle framework, then builds on it with definitions of projects, tasks and expressing dependencies of a task. The details of how to write single and multi-project builds, tasks and task extensions and custom plugins are well addressed and give the reader enough to accomplish gradle based projects. I had used a lot of these capabilities in my gradle builds but the book helped me understand that there are simpler constructs I could use, a point-in-case being the concept of ''rules' covered in 4.2.11 which allows common code/patterns to be applied repeatedly. I find that after reading the book I can put more structure to the gradle builds and simplify them.

This book starts out with a very good definition of what the Cloud is, and explains the benefits and trade-offs to using Cloud Solutions. This is a good book if you want to familiarize yourself with cloud computing technology. I like it.

Great cards, but you could save yourself some money

I love these cards. Deserves all the great reviews. However, the new edition is basically the same as the last edition as far as content goes. I think there are 2 extra cards. They are worth every penny, but if you're a student, might want to save some money and keep the 3rd edition. I have only gone through about 1/2 of the cards, so my review is based on that. If I find any other new info, I will update. The cards are now thicker, and have a glossy coating. This is good since they're more sturdy and resistant to stains. But it can make it hard if you like to write on them or highlight things you keep forgetting. Also, makes them seem more daunting since the set itself is about 1/3 thicker than the last edition, even though it has the same number of cards. Another nice addition is that it comes with a big ring and the cards are punched, so you can keep the cards together easier. The colors are also a bit different and Pathogenesis icons are now black and white ( I preferred the color icons).

Overall, these are great cards for Step or course review. Depends on your learning style. I usually switch between FA and sketchy and use these when I want to change it up or do 10/day so I won't forget things when I'm studying other subjects. I was hoping the new edition would have updated content as far as treatment, or addition of more tips. I guess changing the paper and adding a glossy finish categorizes them as "new edition". This is a great resource and I appreciate the author and publisher for this, but at the same time, I don't like when they change the cover or minor words and call it a new edition... But I understand it's business :)

Must have! Great supplemental resource for medical students!

I love these cards. Each card is filled with descriptive pictures, colors, clinical vignettes, mechanism of action, treatments, and more. They summarize everything you need to know for micro on the COMLEX and USMLE. There really isn't a downfall to these cards. Not that it matters too much, but the cards are very smooth and easier to handle. Each one is relatively wide however. But the cards serve their purpose and helps CONSOLIDATE everything you need to know about every microbe for the boards.

Gr 6–9—Lee pens his harrowing journey from one of North Korea's city elite to a homeless and hungry vagrant. Lee, an only child, grew up comfortably in the nation's capital of Pyongyang because his father was a well-respected member of the military. Yet with no warning, the boy and his parents were deported to the countryside. Lee, who had known only the strict rituals and decorum of Pyongyang, was initially horrified by life in Gyeong-seong. Mass hunger, public executions, and unemployment were rampant—a stark contrast to the propaganda Lee had been taught his whole life. Forced by starvation, Lee's parents left him in search of commerce or emigration. He fended for himself for almost five years. His struggle is chronicled in a tightly written first-person narrative. Lee would eventually lead a gang of boys who lived by their wiles, stealing just enough to survive. The tension that runs throughout the narrative is somewhat alleviated by the mere existence of the work. Lee provides a summary of the history of Korea and the politics of the famine in North Korea, achieving a great balance between historical context and storytelling. Lee incorporates Korean words throughout the text and defines them with a pronunciation guide in the back matter. Awesome Novel, a Must Read

All I knew about North Korea was what I read in news articles. This book was amazingly eye opening. It's very well written, I felt that I was truly watching this all unfold.

Sungju Lee is an incredible person, who lived through horrors, yet turned it all towards trying to make the world a better place. His humbleness is remarkable and I send out a prayer that he finds that one last thing he's desperately seeking.

Amazing story, a little too perfectly written

I have read many books by North Korean escapees. Each one is fascinating and I have enormous sympathy and respect for the problems these people endure. This book adds the interesting perspective of a boy whose parents fell from official grace, causing them to leave Pyongyang and suffer socially. However, the dialogue and events in this book at times feel like they were contrived as afterthoughts, making it feel artificial, and more like a book written by an English speaking co-author who added drama and philosophy, rather than the actual, contemporary experience of a young teen trying to survive during a famine.

I've read several books on North Korea and those who have escaped. Sungju Lee deserves every bit of respect and admiration for what he went through to simply survive. This happened in OUR day in OUR time... less than 20 years ago, people were starving to death in North Korea.

This book is excellent and shows you how hard the people of North Korea have it and how we as the rest of the free world need to help and pray for their freedom. This book is a MUST read. Thank you Susan McClelland for your assistance in helping Sungju Lee.

My hear hurts for the North Korean people. This book has pushed me to do more, research more, and pray harder for them.
