First published in 1917, On Growth and Form was at once revolutionary and conservative. Scottish embryologist D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson (1860-1948) grew up in the newly cast shadow of Darwinism, and he took issue with some of the orthodoxies of the day--not because they were necessarily wrong, he said, but because they violated the spirit of Occam's razor, in which simple explanations are preferable to complex ones. In the case of such subjects as the growth of eggs, skeletons, and crystals, Thompson cited mathematical authority: these were matters of "economy and transformation," and they could be explained by laws governing surface tension and the like. (He doubtless would have enjoyed the study of fractals, which came after his time.) In On Growth and Form, he examines such matters as the curve of frequency or bell curve (which explains variations in height among 10-year-old schoolboys, the florets of a daisy, the distribution of darts on a cork board, the thickness of stripes along a zebra's flanks, the shape of mountain ranges and sand dunes) and spirals (which turn up everywhere in nature you look: in the curve of a seashell, the swirl of water boiling in a saucepan, the sweep of faraway nebulae, the twist of a strand of DNA, the turns of the labyrinth in which the legendary Minotaur lived out its days). The result is an astonishingly varied book that repays skimming and close reading alike. English biologist Sir Peter Medawar called Thompson's tome "beyond comparison the finest work of literature in all the annals of science that have been recorded in the English tongue." --Gregory McNamee

Another excellent book whose Kindle version is terrible!

I have had a copy of this book since I was 16. I have given it as gifts, and believe it to be one of the fundamental books that has changed science and the way we think of the world. As you can tell I love this book. However, the Kindle version is almost useless. The tables are not reproduced in any readable way, and there are none of the pictures that are needed to understand the text. eBooks like this do a tremendous disservice to the Kindle. This could be a wonderful resource to have on the Kindle, but no care was taken in the transcription, and to charge for this is an outrage. There is absolutely no way that I could recommend the Kindle version of this wonderful book.

a classic beyond compare

This book was written in the 1st World War and revised in the 2nd World War by an author whose scholarship has not been excelled over all these years. This was the book that first brought my attention almost 70 years ago to Fibonacci series, logarithmic spiral, phi the golden ratio, and trasformative geometry applied to biological evolution of growth and forms. Profusely illustrated and annotated, this classic book is for keeps.

Unreadable because of poor production

I wish I had read the reviews to this edition before I bought it because I would not have wasted my money. However, my complaint is different from that of the others I have read. The book I received? I literally can't read it. Imagine using a copier to copy the pages of a book, with the "darkness" factor set high. That's what I got. A grey background to every page. There is such poor contrast between the type and the page that it's all just a big wash of grey. What a disappointment. btw there was no publisher listed anywhere on this edition - nor any mention that it was abridged. I suspect it is an Amazonian "on-demand" printing, apparently overseen by a broken robot. I shall search out the unabridged edition elsewhere.

Read the Book.

I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER is a story about a group of four high school students who are involved in a hit and run accident which ends up killing a young boy. Speeding down the road late at night after hours of partying, the group strikes a young boy on his bicycle. Instead of stopping to help, the group drives to the nearest phone and makes an anonymous phone call to the police to report the accident. The group makes a pact not to tell what happened. The event causes the breakdown of fellowship between the four friends and they go their separate ways. About a year later, one of the girls receives an anonymous note that reads "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Horrified, she gets in touch with the other members of the pact and the chase is on. One thing leads to another and before they know it, they're trying to outsmart a killer.
If you've seen the movie, don't be expecting any graphic violence here or a man with a hook. Instead, this story revolves itself around lessons of honesty, revenge, and the dangers of living a lie. The characters are realistic and easy to relate to. Girls will probably enjoy this book much more than guys because of the romantic elements involved, but it has enough who-dunnit to appeal to males, too.

Summertime

I've read several Lois Duncan books and "I Know What You Did Last Summer" is by far the most surprising and suspenseful of them all. I have once watched the movie "I Know What You Did Last Summer" a while back and remember it to be hardly interesting. The book version however, was much more appealing to the mind than the movie was. The book has the same basic as the movie did with the same four main characters, Julie, Helen, Ray and Barry. It starts out the same with a car accident with a stranger in the beginning that comes back to haunt them the next summer, with threats and later into more killings and suspense than the movie had to offer. The entire story leaves you hanging on the tip of your chair from suspense at its finest. The ending was different from what I had originally expected and I'm sure other readers of this book feel the same. I recommend all mystery/horror and Lois Duncan readers to read this book if they have the time and interest in this type of book or are a fan of Lois Duncan's workings. I rate this book with 5 stars because of my high level of interest and concern throughout the entire book.

One night, while coming home from partying, Barry hit a young boy riding a bicycle. Also in the car were Julie, Ray, and Helen. They all panicked and then called the police anonymously. They made a pact never to tell anyone about the accident. It's been a year now and someone's out for revenge. They all get some sort of sign that someone else knows about it, but who? No one ever told anyone else.
I like how this book keeps you in suspense. The story leads up to the climax very well with everyone getting notes or phone calls. The author doesn't give anything away about the person sending the notes' is, until he reveals himself. You can easily follow when the author switches from one point of view to another. The conflict of someone out to get you seems real because you can kind of imagine someone doing that. The characters Lois Duncan has brought "alive" seem very realistic (especially if you've seen the movie). They were all really believable. I kind of wish the book would extend so you could see what happens after everything has happened.
I would recommend this book to people if you like suspense and mystery. I think this is a really good book. It's easy to follow the book.

Dr. Weinstein is Professor and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Dr. O'Malley co-founded the first human robotics head and neck and skull base program in the world and is co-principal investigator of the first IRB approved human clinical trial for robotic surgery in the specialty. He is actively developing novel robotic surgical procedures (TORS) and instrumentation to advance the use of this technology in all aspects of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. He was instrumental in the achievement of US FDA approval in December 2009 for TORS (Trans Oral Robotic Surgery).
