MUST GET
By msully
If you are looking for a great series that involves Angels, mortals, teenage angst that includes love and lust - this is a must buy. I immediately fell in love with this series and have re-read it countless times. Every time I read it I find another piece of the story that I missed the last time I read it or at least I come to understand the story a little better with each read. It is such a great story that covers many life times of love adn loss and it takes you along on the journey to witness whether this love if that is worth all it has endured and lost in the end. I promise this is not a waste of your time or money.

YA Paranormal focusing on angels, Nephilim, and fallen angels.
By Melissa Owens
Lauren Kate's Fallen novels are a refreshing change from most of the paranormal books that are filling bookshelves across the world these days, given that the stories focus on angels, fallen angels, Nephilim, etc., as opposed to vampires, werewolves, faeries, and the like. That said, I ultimately thought this series would have been better suited as a trilogy. The third book was probably my least favorite of the group -- I would rather have seen the stories of Luce's past lives incorporated across the other three books. This one book that focused on her trip through time to view her past lives with Daniel just got tedious for me.

Overall, I enjoyed the characters. Luce's self-discovery over the course of the four books is really laid out quite well and we see her grow quite a bit. I really enjoyed her as a heroine throughout every book. Daniel, on the other hand, seems sort of pathetic and one-dimensional to me at this point. But in all fairness, I suppose if I had to go through thousands of years of losing the person I loved over and over again, I might be pretty pathetic towards the end, myself. Of course, there are several other angels, Archangels, and Nephilim who are presented as everyday people and it is amusing to read about them in that light and consider the possibility of angels among us. And who can forget Lucifer's alter-ego, Bill the Gargoyle?

Ultimately, I enjoyed the ending, but uh, that synopsis for the fourth book? Not really accurate, in my opinion. I was prepping myself for a major plot twist and was a little disappointed that I got caught up in anticipation over what proved to be nothing. In fact, the ending was basically exactly what I thought would happen from the beginning of the books. Not that that's a bad thing, but I have grown so accustomed to plot twists that I wouldn't have minded one or two more throughout these stories. But I'm a sucker for "happily ever after"and that is essentially what we got -- I really enjoyed reading Luce's and Daniel's relationship fall into place after everything they had been through. It was a bit poignant, really.

Bottom line, if you are into YA paranormal these days, I think you'll enjoy these books. There's nothing particularly ground-breaking about them, but they are an easy read and a bit of a departure from "the norm" out there.

Its good. Its funny. Its my pick for this years best 'How to' guitar book
By mervyns
I bought this with a view to upgrading my jazz-guitar skills but discovered this book offers a whole lot more than guitar playing instruction. I am a better musician for reading it, plain and simple. Richard Niles is a masterful educator because while his approach is light-hearted, a lot of knowledge is packed into every laugh. There is a place for humour, nay a need for humour, in education, and this strikes a chord with me. Congratulations on maybe the most efficient ‘How to play guitar’ book I have yet come across. Its certainly the funniest. Recommended for all guitar players out there with room for improvement.

Everything you need to understand and play jazz (on any instrument) is in this book.
By Lauren Passarelli
From Dreaming To Gigging: Jazz Guitar in 6 Months Richard is brilliant & hilarious. Everything you need to understand and play jazz (on any instrument) is in this book. The title seems like a fantasy, but if you diligently follow his guidance, you will be improvising and expressing yourself sooner than you think. Richard is intelligent, organized and able to present a subject as deep as jazz in a step wise, make serious progress, systematic, yet artful way. He's got you covered, you will learn, you will understand, you will know. You'll be gigging in six months. Lauren Passarelli, Professor of Guitar, Berklee College of Music

I feel like I'm beginning to know what I'm doing
By Garrett Wolfe Simon
This book is a MUST have for anyone who wants to express themselves, not only on guitar, but on bass, piano, or perhaps even sitar! I've been playing professionally for half a century, and for the first time, since I cracked open this book, I feel like I'm beginning to know what I'm doing. And while I am learning to master my musical language and craft, Dr. Niles keeps me laughing. This is the most informative, easy to use, and fun music text I have ever used. My only complaint is that he didn't write it decades ago. 8 out of five stars!!!

This Norton Critical Edition of Death and the King's Horseman is the only student edition available in the United States. Based on events that took place in 1946 in the ancient Yoruban city of Oyo, Soyinka's acclaimed and powerful play addresses classic issues of cultural conflict, tragic decision-making, and the psychological mindsets of individuals and groups. The text of the play is accompanied by an introduction and explanatory annotations for the many allusions to traditional Nigerian myth and culture.

"Backgrounds and Sources" helps readers understand Death and the King's Horseman's traditional African contexts and the role of theater in African culture. Included are a map of Yoruba-land, discussions of Yoruban religious beliefs and cultural traditions, Soyinka on the various forms that theater has taken in African culture in order to survive, and Anthony Appiah on Soyinka's struggle with the problem of African identity in the creation of Death and the King's Horseman. Commentary on the play as both a theatrical production and a classroom text is provided by Gerald Moore, Tanure Ojaide, and Martin Rohmer.

"Criticism" collects nine major essays on the play and the difficulties it presents to readers. Contributors include D. S. Izevbaye, Eldred Durosimi Jones, Henry Louis Gates Jr., Biodun Jeyifo, Wole Soyinka, Joan Hepburn, Adebayo Williams, David Richards, and Olakunle George.

Very stirring
By Giovanni Papiro
I read this book in 1996, and I still remember almost every detail because it was so stirring, so moving. It is about pride and obligations and how the two shape one's role in society. It made me review my own definitions of these two things, my own life in different societies. I'm delighted to have read this book and will be reading it many times over.

One Great Writer
By Ross Ike
At a university seminar in the US recently, Prof. Soyinka was asked to respond to charges by certain critics that his writing wasn't 'African' enough. He responded, saying "The people who say these things, I refer to as neo-Tarzanists, people whose Africa is the Africa of Tarzan, swinging from tree to tree. That's not my Africa", he said, to a standing, thunderous ovation. It is difficult to imagine a writer in English today with a wider grasp of the language. Some of his work is unbelievable - metaphor, irony, the supernatural, interwoven with tragedy, lyricism, and language. Top-draw.

Powerful Play from the Nobel Prizewinner
By IamNateDavis
Be sure to read the author's note, because if you don't, you might take it as an East vs. West, colonial vs. tribal, new vs. old story as it would appear on first reading. But in his note, Soyinka states that the "threnodic essence" of the work is a theme even more universal: "the numinous passage which links all: transition." Change is indeed common to us all, and as my mother-in-law points out, change is usually perceived as bad. Yet change is something we all must come to terms with, and since one of literature's great benefits is to act as a mental dress rehearsal for life, this lean play (acessible on first reading, yet rich enough to reread) should find a place on every thoughtful reader's shelf.

The university-educated Soyinka (as one can infer from the author's note) has quite the erudite vocabulary, yet the prose style of Death and the King's Horseman reminded me more of ancient Greek tragedy in translation than anything else: simple yet poetic phrasing, and the homespun proverbial sayings of a pre-industrial age. What struck me as an information-age Westerner was how many of these Yoruba sayings (being related to animals or farming) were hard to relate to; an incidental lesson of this book was how detached from the natural world I've become. Visiting nature for recreation isn't the same as having your livelihood dependent on it.

Another aspect of this play that happens to be particularly interesting in juxtaposition to the film juggernaut of Avatar is that neither the Nigerian characters nor the English are portrayed as completely right or wrong, sympathetic or not. Sure, the English come off as somewhat ignorant intruders, yet they act in good faith; conversely, Elesin, the protagonist, initially appears heroic but as events unfold he grows less so. Whereas in Avatar the modern Westerners are evil caricatures and the Na'vi noble savages, in Soyinka's work matters are more nuanced--more like real life.

Genius on the Edge: The Bizarre Double Life of Dr. William Stewart Halsted, by Gerald Imber MD

Now in paperback, the groundbreaking biography of the most influential surgeon in American history.

“Gerald Imber’s new biography is the first retelling of Halstead’s story in many decades and a particularly expert and thoughtprovoking narrative makes the intense strangeness of Halstead’s subsequent career a gripping story.”

—Abigail Zuger, New York Times Science Section

Dr. William Stewart Halsted’s life was fascinating and complex. Halsted, perhaps the most important surgeon America has ever produced, battled a lifelong cocaine addiction and maintained numerous secret relationships while simultaneously devising revolutionary medical innovations. Yet the story of Halsted’s life, one of seemingly irreconcilable extremes, is in many ways the story of modern medicine.

Before Halsted, poorly-trained doctors performed surgery without anesthesia in unsanitary conditions and patients were rarely expected to survive. Halstead transformed the medical practice by inventing local and spinal anesthesia; introducing the use of rubber gloves during surgery; pioneering the use of fine silk thread for sutures; developing techniques for stabilizing blood pressure during surgery; and inventing the radical mastectomy, blood transfusions, and surgical cures for hernias.

Genius on the Edge is an illuminating biography of a complex and troubled man whose brilliance we continue to benefit
from today.

From Booklist
Clearly an homage to the man to whom “virtually every academically affiliated surgeon can trace his or her teachers,” teaching surgeon Imber’s effort is more than a biography. It is a scholarly reconstruction, complete with historical perspective, of the life of a man who managed to revolutionize surgical practices and, indeed, the entire field of surgery, while battling the enduring and debilitating consequences of self-inflicted medical experimentation. To make surgery more efficient for surgeons, safer, and freer of pain for patients, Halsted began to explore various methods of anesthesia, including the then recently discovered drug, cocaine. He became addicted. Failure to kick that addiction played havoc with his professional life and ultimately forced him to turn optimistically to heroin, generally thought at the time to be an effective treatment. The result was lifelong heroin dependence, despite which he was eventually able to not only function but also continue a brilliant career. Imber’s academic style and inclusive approach are solid but may not appeal to all tastes. --Donna Chavez

A heroic historical page-turner
By Angel Steller
Dr. Gerald Imber will change your views of what it means to be a doctor and a patient, to be sick and to be well. While tracing the convoluted evolution of modern surgery, Imber also chronicles the prodigious, twisted career of the greatest surgeon in American history. As he modernized medicine - introducing such life-sparing novelties as anesthesia, scrubsuits, handwashing, sterlized instruments, even while the medical establishment strenuously resisted his innovations -- Halsted himself descended into a dark, secretive abyss of cocaine abuse and closeted homosexuality. Yet Halsted's techniques and his teaching were so unimpeachably sound, they remain the model for practicing and teaching surgery today. Halsted's story is written with such clarity, it will appeal universally - along the way, Imber's tale encompasses, among other matters, 19th-century American and European history, and some commendably high and lamentably low examples of the human condition. It is a wonder Halsted never had a biography before; we should be very grateful that Dr. Gerald Imber took on this daunting task. His impressive scholarship never gets in the way of good story telling. The charm, humor, and authority of the author's voice shines warmly throughout the sprawling narrative.

Strangely fascinating
By ryan morrison
By far the best biography I have read. I did not have to skip over any boring parts or risk falling asleep. It was strange to realize that not only did people not always use sterile practices but that within the last 100 years people did not use sterile practices. Dr Halsted snd his peers were the creators of modern medicine as we still know it, and their story is a fascinating one.

Fascinating look into how modern surgery developed
By Debbie
"Genius on the Edge" is an interesting book describing the medical developments (especially in surgery) during the period of about 1846 to 1922. The first third of the book mainly focused on what surgery was like before this period, on the developments that occurred from 1846 to 1889, and how they affected Halsted's medical training and prompted his surgical innovations. The rest of the book was more a series of short biographies of men who worked with Halsted and the developments they (and he) brought to the practice of surgery from 1889-1922. It also covered Halsted's marriage and how he lived.

The author didn't assume that the reader was familiar with medical terms and so concisely worked that information in as was needed to understand the innovations. He did an excellent job of making the topic fascinating and easy to understand. I found the book a quick read despite the amount of information packed into it. I also liked how the author wove the general technological changes and social setting into the story so we could see how society effected the advances and how Halsted and the others influenced society in turn. While the book mostly focused on American surgery (especially that done at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine), the author also brought up related advances over in Europe.

There were only a couple of brief descriptions of actual surgery, so most of the book probably wouldn't bother those who get queasy by descriptions of operations.

Some of the topics covered were: the introduction of general anesthetics, heat sterilization, and antiseptics to make surgery safer. How medical training had been done and how it changed (both in medical school and post-graduate) under the influence of Halsted and his friends at Johns Hopkins. The creation of out-patient clinics, the beginnings of bacteriology and the germ theory, the change from quick and brutal surgery to gentle, careful handing during surgery, the introduction of surgical gloves, of using cocaine as a local anesthetic, emergency blood transfusion, surgery of the brain, and much more.

Overall, I'd highly recommend this well-written and interesting book to those interested in how medicine (especially surgery) has developed into what we take for granted today.

I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.

One Blood, by John Harris

"Every Australian Christian should read One Blood"
— Tim Costello, CEO, World Vision Australia

Out of a burning conviction that 'God made of one blood all nations', Christians have carried their message to Aborigines throughout Australia. It is this encounter and its results that John Harris explores in these many stories that tell one story: how, in the face of abuse, paternalism, prejudice, isolation and crippling hardship, the Christian gospel was brought to the Aboriginal people. Although sometimes blind to their own faults, those who brought this message were remarkable people of great compassion and courage.

For two centuries, this activity was a major force in the lives of the Indigenous people of Australia. Christian missions were sometimes places of regimentation marked by a loss of freedom; often, too, they were places of survival and refuge for a suffering people. The missions may seem to have failed, yet from many of them are emerging distinctive Aboriginal churches with strong Indigenous leadership.

One Blood is the definitive review of 200 years of history. As a reference work, the over 2,600 footnotes and extensive bibliography provide a treasure trove of primary sources. As a story of interaction between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, One Blood is a book which will leave a lasting impact on your life.

One Blood has been extensively reviewed, analysed and discussed in both the the religious and secular press. These are some excerpts from published reviews:

This is a monumental work of research and scholarship, of deep insight and discernment…opening up with great clarity the vista of tragedy and despair for the Aboriginal people… (Christian Book Newsletter)

This is a book of immense power…a major event in the history of Australian self-understanding. Do not underestimate it. (Adelaide Advertiser)

John Harris has written an astonishingly powerful and comprehensive book… It is a passionate work, but one that is also beautifully controlled and balanced. It makes enthralling reading… (Lutheran Theological Journal)

One Blood is a powerful, disturbing and inspiring book…It has certainly helped my own self-understanding…(The Canberra Times)

One Blood is an immense book, immense in its physical size ( almost 1000 pages) and immense in its scope and breadth of treatment of the encounter between Aboriginal people and those who came to them as Christian missionaries, an encounter spanning 200 years and a whole continent. No one knows more about this subject than John Harris and no one else will ever deal with it again with his unique mix of scholarship and passion… (Church Scene)

Ther are some books which helped me to understand my country: books like Facey’s A Fortunate Life and Morgan’s My Place. I now add Harris’ One Blood. Don’t miss it. (Southern Cross Magazine)

This is an important book…for what it does for the church, for the craft of history…and for the understanding of the Australian people…It is a compelling story of great sadness as well as of great triumph, and essential book for…the future development of Australian Society or Christianity in this country...(On Being Magazine)

One Blood gives an excellent overall view of Christianity’s missionary efforts, both Protestant and Catholic. It is written with admirable objectivity, allocating praise and blame where due… (The Catholic Leader)

Excellent overview of Christian outreach among Australian Aboriginal peoples
By Evan P Groombridge
John Harris has done an outstanding service for all Australians through compiling this overview of Christian outreach among Aboriginal people. I was blind to the treatment and issues faced by Aboriginal people since the English first settled in Australia. I am delighted to know now about the Australian heroes who left their own homes and cultures to proclaim Jesus Christ to Aboriginal cultures/peoples. This huge book has been very helpful to understand the situations throughout Australia from both the settlers/white Australian and Aboriginal perspectives. I am looking forward to reading in the future his summary of the develops in Aboriginal treatment and evangelistic outreach, especially amongst indigenous Aboriginal churches, since the Mabo court case. I would thoroughly recommend this book to both Christian Australians and secular Australians. Some people may not admire the missionaries' motives. I admire such people who tried to protect and bring benefit to the Aboriginals. It has been interesting to read how the early missionaries and settlers could just not fathom the culturally different world views of the Aboriginals. I trust I will be able to care for Aboriginal Australians much better after the insights I have gathered from this great book.

A must read book.
By Frank Dunster
I think this book has opened my eyes to historic attitudes of early explorers it mind that could not understand people of different colour and non English language and different ways of life. The Australian Aborigine was a unique race of people who had freedom to roam and exist and live with their own ethical code of conduct. Progressive Governors and leading churchmen could not always comprehend that there were other creatures who occupied a new land as traditional owners who saw invaders of contrasting colour that appeared aggressive and invasive to their land. The early explorers thought they were superior to something they had never before encountered, a people who could not communicate in their language whose only natural weapon was a spear and a bend a stick, a boomerang, for daily gathering of food. Typical of many invaders they raped and pillaged and brought foreign diseases that killed and maimed these innocent people. A different history that I was taught in school in the 1930's. An excellent book that needs a reprint and widely advertised and distributed.

A must read for all Australians
By Aino Lee-Jones
This book is a superb historical account of certain Christian groups' attempts to help the Australian indigenous population to deal with the European invasion of their lands. It deals honestly with the successes and failures of these people as they worked with the communities. It is a must read for those who are seeking to understand the Indigenous people of today.

This book has been out of print for quite a while and its updated version (to mid-1993 events)and its return in a digital format will, I am sure, be welcomed by many new readers seeking to broaden their understanding of the issues as relating to the Australian Indigenous communities. It still contains the many illustrations, maps, references and footnotes which allow the serious reader to be able to follow up on issues of interest.

Get This One if You Have a BC!
By Mac
I really like this book. As a longtime border collie owner, it is refreshing to find a book by an author who truly knows the breed and truly understands the unique training issues. Also, Barbara has some fantastic suggestions, that I as a veterinary nurse and dog trainer, had never heard of! I have implemented a few already with my new pup. Caution to the reader: there are a few issues with medical science inaccuracies. For example, the author warns about too much exercise too young causing hip dysplasia - not true. It's a genetically passed condition and either the individual has malformed hips at BIRTH or not. (Exercise too young can however affect other joints and bone formation..) Also, some of the comments about nutrition are based on myth, not sound medicine. But if you get past those issues, this is a useful and valuable book for border collie owners. I went right back and bought her other book about BCs.

Helped me accept my father's death.
By A Customer
This book shed an incredible light to my existing faith. My father died of cancer at an early age of 69. The title of this book was mentioned to be by a very young stranger, that for some unknown reason knew I should read this book. This book gives you the realization of the supreme being and that everyday is a planned lesson that we must learn to reach God. It teaches that good and bad must be experienced to perfect our souls. It will reveal to anyone that we can surpass all that life on this side offers and when we have finished the testing ground, we will reach "Many Wonderful Things"

Many, many, many wonderful ideas
By Charlie
A dear friend recommended this book to me. At first, I couldn't get into it then I was so absorbed by it that I couldn't put it down, I was taking it every where with me just to read a page at a time. The theme is so simple and so important - love yourself - turn away from self-condemnation, sorrow, resentment - and love yourself. Then, seek a partnership with God, seek/accept loving, encouraging support to be a wonderful, generous person that wants to grow and help others grow (in the way that is best for them). I have so enjoyed this book, so enjoyed sharing it with others. My favorite response is when people see the title - Many Wonderful Things and say it must be a book about dancing or flowers or my girlfriend - whatever people interpret as Many Wonderful Things.

From Booklist
Sailhamer's introduction is an explicitly conservative evangelical argument for a canonical, text-centered approach to the theology of the Old Testament. It is a particularly useful introduction (even for readers who are not conservative or evangelical) because of the care and evenhandedness with which the author describes alternative strategies of interpretation and makes his own choices explicit. The book becomes a kind of flowchart, mapping Sailhamer's choices--of text over event, canon over criticism, confession over description, and diachronic over synchronic interpretation--but also attending with care to alternatives at each step along the way. One could argue that the choices are not so neatly binary as the flowchart implies, but that would be quibbling. On the whole, this is an excellent introductory text. Steve Schroeder

Conservative
By Norm Macdonald
This is a very thorough Introduction to OT Theology. Not for the faint of heart. At times it gets rather redundant and just plain too much information after the point has been made. But a definite for anyone wanting a straight conservative approach to the biblical text and OT theology.

Canonical Theology
By J. Barginear
In this book is a serious study of Old Testament Theology."In-Texuality" "Inner Texuality" "inter-texuality" and "Con -Texuality" is the method of exegesis that Dr. Sailhamer explains. He comes from a process of Hermeneutic; Text, Canon, Confessional and diachronic (the opposite views are explained also). Then in the Appendix A he presented an aspect of compositional strategy of Pentateuch, titled:
The Mosaic Law and the Theology of the Pentateuch, Appendix B: Compositional Strategies in the Pentateuch. Also, there is an Appendix C and D

Very Scholarly Old Testament Theology
By theologicalresearcher
This book is for those who want an OT theology that is very detailed, highly-technical, and painstakingly exegetical. Sailhamer's book is not like the other OT theology books (e.g., Brevard Childs, Walter Kaiser, Eugene Merrill and Roy Zuck, Ralph Smith, and Bruce Waltke) that deal primarily with themes, messages, and ideas of the OT. The book is primarily hermeneutical and methodological (in fact, the major portion of the book [pp. 29-194] deals with methodology!). If one is looking for a thematical OT theology this book is not for you (try Kaiser, Smith, or Waltke). However, this is an excellent book for those who like to get into the nitty-gritty of OT exegesis and theological methodology. It is a difficult book to read so this book isn't for those who like to cruise through a book.
