About the Author

Arthur R. Kroeber is founding partner of Gavekal Dragonomics, a China-focused economic research consultancy he established in Beijing in 2002 after 15 years as a freelance financial journalist in Asia, and editor of its flagship publication China Economic Quarterly. He is also head of research at the firm's parent company Gavekal, where he advises financial, corporate and government clients on economic and political developments in China. Kroeber is a senior non-resident fellow of the Brookings-Tsinghua Center for Public Policy, adjunct professor at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, and a member of the National Committee on US-China relations. He lives in Beijing and New York.

This is a very readable and clear explanation of the "rise of China." It is not very often that a book of non-fiction is difficult to put down, but I found myself caught up in the author's gripping account. He poses questions in each chapter that bring the story of China's rapid development to life. His answers are grounded in economic development theory, but in ways that bring out the best of this literature and how it relates to the Chinese case. There is a deluge of books on China's development and I have read quite a few of these. This one, however, is by far the best.

It is also useful for understanding the design and development of micro- and macro-scale structures, electric and fluidic systems with an introduction to transduction, and numerous simulations using MATLAB and SIMULINK.

About the Author
Nicolae Lobontiu, Ph.D is associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Alaska Anchorage. His teaching background has run the gamut of mechanical engineering, including: system dynamics, controls, instrumentation and measurement, mechanics of materials, dynamics, vibrations, finite element analysis, boundary element analysis, and thermal system design.

Professor Lobontiu’s research interests for the last decade have focused on compliant mechanisms (mechanical devices which move by elastic deformation of their flexible joints) and micro/nano electromechanical systems. He has authored four books and 20 peer-reviewed journal papers on the aforementioned research topics.

Nicolae Lobontiu, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alaska-Anchorage, brings his years of experience teaching classes in system dynamics, as well as the knowledge gleaned from writing four related previous texts -- Dynamics of Microelectomechanical Systems; Mechanical Design of Microresonators; Mechanics of Microelectromechanical Systems; and, Compliant Mechanism: Design of Flexure Hinges -- to produce this solid text for students entering this emerging field.

The discipline of system dynamics focuses on teaching students "how to create and analyze mathematical models of dynamic, mechanical, electrical/electromagnetic, thermal, and fluid/pneumatic systems" for the purpose of designing and then testing systems before they are actually built. While the author retains a classical approach, Lobontiu also introduces examples from compliant mechanisms and microscale devices and machines.

Consideration is given to mechanical engineering problems for junior and senior-level undergraduate students in support of mechanical, aerospace, electrical, biomedical and civil engineering courses and explores mechanism and movement in springs and joints present in "micro-machined, lithographic based devices to traditional models of microscale, fluidic, and electromechanical systems." Offers a "foundation and framework for the development of controllers applied to these dynamical systems." Includes examples and problems at the end of each chapter to familiarize readers with the modeling and dynamical systems engineers are likely to encounter in the future.

Publisher touts the text as "the first system dynamics textbook to include extensive examples from the relatively new application areas of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and compliant (flexible) mechanical devices," and to offer "more ancillary instructor support than any other system dynamics text."

Well organized, clearly written, lots of examples

I'm very pleased with this textbook. Since I'm auditing a course I can be far more selective in what portions I want to dive into and which ones I'm content to skim. So it was great to see that each chapter starts with a detailed list of objectives that clearly outline the concepts and topics covered (often with references to supporting topics in other chapters). I'm finding that to be a highly effective way to discern which chapters are worth really getting into, and which ones I'm content to just get the general gist.

The writing style is clear and direct. There are many worked-through examples (but, if I had my druthers, I'd like to see a few more, especially concerning liquid systems modeling). The suggested reading list at the conclusion of each chapter is a bit sparse, but generally current (at least as current as it could be in a printed text). The summary of MATLAB commands in the Appendix has been invaluable so far.

I am, however, very disappointed that I can't seem to gain access to the online supplemental material. The book states that there is a bonus online chapter and, more importantly, downloadable MATLAB code for the examples in the text. I've tried to access this info using the URL provided in the book, but all I get is caught in a loop that goes nowhere. I've only tried it using IE, so perhaps it's a browser issue. I won't downgrade the rating for the book due to this since it may be a problem on my end, but it is a disappointment.

UPDATE: 1/6/11 -- the publisher was kind enough to provide an updated URL (see the first comment below for the link) and it works fine. It allows access to a bonus chapter 11 (PDF format), add-ons for several existing chapters (PDF) and a Word doc containing the MATLAB code that you can cut and paste. Great supplemental material (especially the MATLAB code).

The Alaska based author does a great job filling this book cover to cover with well organized text, examples and illustrations. Solid, basic text

I adopted this book as a textbook for my course in global trade and marketing. It was the ONLY book I found that actually covered the subject I wanted to teach and did so at a level that would engage my (MBA) students. In using it, I find that I chose well. Students report finding it useful and on target.

The only negatives lie in the book's first chapter. It seems that its authors wanted to place the text in the universe and attempted to use its first chapter to do so. Had I read only the first chapter, I would not have selected the book for my class. Fortunately, though, later chapters read well and have good topical focus.

Be aware that a "gray market" edition is circulating. Although marked for distribution only in the Indian Subcontinent, its content appears to be similar, if not identical, to the one coming from Pearson out of the UK. It lacks color, and its printing lacks good finish, but its content seems to be identical. I randomly checked pages, and all that I checked were the same between the two books. The gray market edition is substantially cheaper!

Accurate, but with flaws.

The transcriptions in this book are very accurate, and in some parts even goes in depth into explain somethings, like pointing out notes that are really tape echo, and explaining why the G changes from beat one in the first two verses to beat two in the third verse onward in Dazed and Confused.

It's also very complete, including all of the guitar parts, and in some places transcribing other instruments for guitar.

However, there are some glaring errors in this book. There are places where the tablature does not match the notes that are written above. I've noticed this in several places throughout the book, and usually the notation is correct. So, if you only read tab, you might run into some problems in some spots. Either way, watch out for the mistakes.

Overall, I don't think you'll be disappointed. But, they could have spent a little more time proofreading before going to press.

Not The Typical Fake Book

For years I spent my money buying cowboy chord "made easy for guitar" fake books and never learned anything that didn't sound like campfire music. With the advent of tablature and Hal Leonard books you can now learn an accurately played version of songs by your favorite artists. Granted they are more dollars and cents but are well worth learning the version you really want to be playing. Now, if they would just print these in a format that the book could be opened up and laid flat without breaking the binding life would be perfect.

If you are a Zep fan and a guitar player you definetly must have this songbook! It's very accurate and the choice of songs is nearly perfect. One or two absolute classics have been left out, such as "In my time of dying", but it covers all the work of this majestic band!

Excellent read! better, deeper sex-life and self-awareness

i can whole heartedly recommend this to anyone that is interested in helping others explore their submissiveness or for subs who want to learn more about themselves. Kali took me through the training she discussed in this book and it was an eye opening experience... the techniques she discusses in this ebook helped me explore my submissive side and to get ride of the barriers i didn't even realize i was putting up. this has helped my sex life significantly, just in becoming more aware... i've also been able to experience 'sub space' which i had never heard of before and when i did hear about it, discounted it without understanding... but now having experienced this, i have been able to tap into this feeling of peace, calmness and arousal all at the same time... it has been an incredible experience that is hard to describe as it's been both surprising and very valuable... Kali is very talented, knowledgable and has a lot to offer

RIP-OFF!!!

This book is disorganized, there is no connecting one part to the other. Hardly a book on hypnosis or control. Even with prior experience you will be hard pressed to make anything in it coherent. The book is for the submissive, no dominant would recommend this drivel. There is a claim to other training if you purchase the book; that is no longer available. WAY overpriced for the information contained within.

This workout book is a MUST HAVE !!

If you want excellent workout tips to tone various muscle groups, and tips to help you get and stay healthy, this is it.

Only 3 in 10 Americans are physically active enough to stay physically fit. Be one of the 3 in 10 who ARE fit. And if you aren't already fit, it is NEVER TOO LATE TO START.

The Workout Workbook is:

Prepared by the editors of Harvard Health Publications in consultation with Jonathan Bean, M.D., M.S., M.P.H., Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Harvard Medical School and Master Trainers and Fitness Consultants Josie Gardiner and Joy Prouty.

If you are looking for an all-around book on what to eat, or tips on what kinds of cardio workouts (running, swimming, team sports, dance, aerobics, tennis, track, field and so on) are good for your level of fitness and your lifestyle, you may need additional calorie burning exercises or you may need to do these exercises longer or with greater intensity.

However, if, like most of us, you have limited time each day and limited space options (too hot or too cold, rainy or snowy outside or you don't have access to a health club or gym), these exercises are ones you can do in your home, hotel or office without any problem.

If you are looking to lose 10 to 50 pounds, these exercises will do a superb job of toning the muscles you do have (and will do a little bit toward reducing the amount of fat on top of the muscles) but if you have major poundage to lose, you also need to address that issue.

Muscle does not turn to fat. I hope you know that. Sometimes, it seems that muscle turns to fat, but muscle only becomes firmer with exercise and less firm (less toned) with lack of exercise.

Fat is fat.

Sometimes, people are disappointed with toning exercises because they have not lost much weight or they still cannot fit well into clothes they want to.

You will still look much better with toned muscles (even if you have 10 to 30 pounds to lose) than if you are blobby.

The best idea of all is to combine exercises such as these with excellent nutrition designed to lose fat and cardio exercises designed to burn fat.

Let's take a look at what some of these excellent exercises consist of.

I have tried some new ones here and have relied on many of my old ones, while continuing to run (when it is not too hot) and by going to the gym (when I have time).

I assume you know why exercise is good for you:

It will make you feel better, emotionally and physically, as well as reduce your risk of depression, diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer. Seriously. People who exercise vigorously (assuming they also do not smoke cigarettes) and who do not consume much alcohol, who eat a diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, have a MUCH lower risk of getting the above diseases and medical conditions.

PLANNING WORKSHEET! I use these all the time!

SET YOUR GOALS:

Flexibility exercises such as Pilates (I love flexibility exercises and do these every day)

Resistance exercises (these are great for toning, and I do these every day, too, such as wall push ups). They will make you sore when your other muscles are too tired from running, for example.

Exercises that include a medicine ball, a body bar, resistance bands or tubing, stability ball are excellent, easy to use, and not expensive. These tools make the exercise not only fun but much more effective in achieving your goals.

The routines in the book include photos, as well as basic repetitions (reps), supersets, plus tips on intensity and tempo to gain the maximum benefit.

None of these exercises are difficult, and I say this as someone, who like 99 percent of the population absolutely hates sit ups and crunches.

The other 1 percent are just body building freaks.

I personally do an excellent substitute of crunches at home that involves wrapping my arms around the back of the couch and hanging my butt off the seat cushions and doing leg lifts, bicycles and leg raises.

YOU WILL FEEL SORE JUST WHERE IT COUNTS AND WITH VERY LITTLE EFFORT.

The photos feature both men and women in the routines, some routines are more suited for men, but most can be done by either sex.

It is an absolutely essential book and I recommend it heartily.

In process modelling, knowledge of the process under consideration is typically partial with significant unknown inputs (disturbances) to the model. Disturbances militate against the desirable trait of model reproducibility. "Grey-box" identification can assist, in these circumstances, by taking advantage of the two sources of information that may be available: any invariant prior knowledge and response data from experiments.

Practical Grey-box Process Identification is a three-stranded response to the following questions which are frequently raised in connection with grey-box methods:

• How much of my prior knowledge is useful and even correct in this environment?

• Are my experimental data sufficient and relevant?

• What do I do about the disturbances that I can’t get rid of?

• How do I know when my model is good enough?

The first part of the book is a short review of the theoretical fundamentals of grey-box identification, focussing particularly on the theory necessary for the software presented in the second part. Part II puts the spotlight on MoCaVa, a MATLAB�-compatible software tool, downloadable from springeronline.com, for facilitating the procedure of effective grey-box identification. Part III demonstrates the application of MoCaVa using two case studies drawn from the paper and steel industries. More advanced theory is laid out in an appendix and the MoCaVa source code enables readers to expand on its capabilities to their own ends.

1971 appointed (by the king) Professor of the chair of Automatic Control at Linkœping Technical Institute.
1972 - 1996 Professor in Automatic Control at the Royal Institute of Tecknology (KTH) in Stockholm.
1972 - 1988 Head of the Department of Automatic Control,
Member of the board of the school of Technical Physics, and Member of the faculty of KTH.
Member of the Swedish IFAC comittee, TFF (national), and IEEE
