BRING ON THE NIGHT

"Bring On the Night" is a scary, fun read of a Chicago haunted by a pair of mysterious predators: one, a madman with a sickle and a tortured past; the other, a bloodthirsty vampire. In the end, it's up to an unconventional cop and a beautiful psychic to bring an end to the vampire's reign of terror. Written in an energetic, friendly style, "Bring on the Night" mixes hard-boiled attitude with monster madness to create one of the best vampire novels since "'Salem's Lot."

A Rare Gem!

Now, I do quite a bit of reading, and it is rare that I read a book as exciting as this one! From the very first page I was hooked, as if upon opening the book I came under its spell.

The main protagonists of the novel are Detective Dennis Coglin and Psychic Alex Castle. As homicides mount in Chicago, Coglin and his partner Detective Heyward believe they have a serial killer on their hands. Things just get worse and weirder from there. They eventually get help from Alex Castle, and come to the harrowing conclusion that a thoroughly evil force is at work in their city. As good of a book as this was, it does leave you with a bunch of questions: where did the vampire come from? How many more are in existence? Given the huge strength advantage for vampires, how was it that the vampire hunter was able to decapitate so many of them (You'll have to read the book to understand what I'm talking about here.)? It wasn't necessary to answer these questions, as it didn't disrupt the flow or the effectiveness of the novel one bit; it just would've been nice to know.

This book is a classic in my personal library after just one read. It's perplexing that writers this talented aren't bestsellers, or at least more prolific than these two have been, as I would love to read more from them.

A REAL VAMPIRE NOVEL

Bring On The Night is not about some recalcitrant, angst ridden, brooding vampire who wants to fall in love or be human again. It harkens back to the true genre of vampire horror, not the romance novels that pose themselves as vampire books today. These vampires are takers. Seducers. Spreaders of evil and horror. The are so much more delicious and yes, appealing than the milquetoast vampires we are force fed today.

Like Stokers Dracula, Fanu's Carmilla or Kings Salems Lot, the vampires in this book are evil and chilling. Revenants of the grave, brought back by malign force to feed on the living, seduce the living and their consequences to those who cross their path are not pretty.

If you want a romance novel, go to Twilight and others of that ilk. If you want a well written horror story about vampires, with a terrific plot and interesting characters, then grab up on this minor classic. It is so good I rate it right behind Dracula, Salem's Lot and Let The Right One In.

Great VAMPIRE books are pretty hard to find. This is one of the few.

Unique world, a touch of romance and lots of action

For a first book, I have to say overall I'm impressed. The author built a unique and intriguing world filled with loveable characters waging a bitter alien race war. It ended up being a much more serious book than I had anticipated and although there is sex, it's not the hot smutty alien sex one might think. In fact, the only thing I found a bit frustrating between the world building, character development, interpersonal relationships, and alliances, was the actual romance. This book encompassed a lack of communication that encompassed almost the entire book and I was screaming in my head, talk, people, talk!

Sandrea is kidnapped from earth by a brutal alien race who's picking off species from all over the universe to perform torturous tests on. It's not quite clear what they're looking for in the beginning, but their experiments all seem to end in failure. With little memory of how, Sandrea manages to escape and comes across a race of beings who are also captured and tortured. She manages to rescue them and they rescue her right back by taking her with them. When they realize earth is too far away to return her to her home, they hope she'll be able to adjust to her new life, especially one general in particular, who cannot keep her off his mind. It's a hard adjustment for Sandrea recovering from torture, isolation and loss, as well as landing in the middle of interplanetary war, but as she goes through the motions and helps in the effort, it may be that the experiments on her didn't fail after all.

The great thing about this story is that there is an actual story and it's not just a lead to sex. This is not your sit and relax beach read. It's actually quite complicated with all the races, politics, games and battle scenes that take place. The characters are slowly developed and wonderful that you can't help but build attachments to them. As I mentioned earlier, the only thing that dragged this book down was the over the top miscommunication. It's clear there is attraction at first site, but instead of addressing it, there's quite a bit of what if he/she doesn't want me that went on for over 100 pages. Even when it's clear they want each other, the author managed to bog it down with another 200 pages of insecurity. Overall, it's a great first book and there's plenty of room for sequels with great characters. I for one would enjoy reading future installments, sans the dreaded miscommunication, and look forward to what comes next.

Needs to be heavily edited. Cover is deceptive.

So weirdly, the "it's okay" rating is 3 stars here, as opposed to the 2 stars over on Goodreads. I'm just gonna cut and paste what I put over there:

First of all, this is a classic example of `never judge a book by its cover.' The creatures described in the story are absolutely nothing like this random dude on the cover. If I were the author, I'd be pissed.

Secondly, this story needs some editing. It's riddled with repetitive wording, misspellings, and composition errors. You'd think the editors at the publisher would have, you know - done their jobs. In fact, the mistakes were so apparent that I was surprised to discover the book wasn't self-published. I checked out the publisher's website and couldn't help but roll my eyes a bit:

The redundancy issues in this story are staggering. There are 24 -- TWENTY FOUR -- instances of the word "speared" throughout the story. He SPEARED her a look. She SPEARED her gaze. Her eager fingers SPEARED over his collarbones. The quick glance he SPEARED. The thesaurus is a wonderful tool, it really is. There was so much spearing going on, I felt like spearing my tablet. Though on occasion, "speared" was substituted with "sheared" or "arrowed." At one point we even get "spear" and "arrow" in the same sentence!

"Erotic shiver" was used multiple times as well. In fact, by the 15th time the word "erotic" was used, I was thoroughly annoyed. Yes, we know it's erotic. It's a romance. Erotic actions/reactions don't actually need to be described as erotic.

Eugen's (the main sex/love interest) voice is described as "chocolate" multiple times, and every time I read that, I immediately thought of the Chocolate Rain guy. If you're not familiar with him, then you NEED to watch this: http://youtu.be/EwTZ2xpQwpA

There was a lot of running around in the woods. And then some action happens. And then some more running around in the woods. And then getting trapped in a cave (locked cell door). Then running. And action stuff. Then getting trapped in a cave...again (Eugen manacled to the wall). Then more running through the woods. It was a little bit exhausting, and I wasn't even the one running around.

Also, the main character's background is rather fuzzy. Some more info on experience and education would have been nice. Pretty much all we really get is that she knows her way around a rifle because of time spent on her uncle's cattle ranch. It's mentioned at times that she's an "amateur" astronomer, that she's only taken a semester or so of it, but she can quote exactly what Lagrangian points are in a textbook-recitation sort of way. It was bizarre when she threw around `expert' terminology without having a clear picture what her profession/background was.

All that said, I did enjoy the story itself. There were some fun concepts. The author was a bit overwhelming at times with the strings of adjectives or the awkward sentence structures, but what I really liked was the world-building. Specifically the peeks into the alien culture (ex: the goundash/cube games), the little caped lizard, and the dog-like laraxdon. I also enjoyed the way the author visualized the events going on inside Sandrea's head during her `jacking in' to the Bluthen ship.

Oh yeah, and Eugen's giant wang.

Phenomenal first book!

For a first book this was off the charts. If you are in to sci-fi romance then this is the book that should be read above all others. The writing style is perfection; storyline, composition, and character development are well executed and at the perfect pace.

I hope that there will be more by this author, and in particular make 'Alien Mine' the first of a possible series. The secondary characters were just as enjoyable as the primary, and as such I hope that they too get a book of their own.

Many, many kudos to this wonderful new author.

excellent guide to sharpening

Payson's book is an excellent guide to sharpening all types of saws, from hand to table saw blades. Also covered are old fashioned saws for cutting down trees and bucking them. Japanese and carbide tipped blades are about the only types not covered, but that does not detract from the books utility. Clearly written and illustrated, highly recommended.

This book pretty much covers sharpening handsaws soup to nuts with lots of illustrations and detail. Includes topic of rejuvinating old saws and creating your own handle.

It also has a few pages of detail on sharpening chainsaw blades as well as standard steel blades ( which is pretty dated with carbide tablesaw blades replacing steel blades )

Best book I've read on sharpening handsaws ( filing - setting - planing teeth level - etc.)

What a great read!!!!!!

I dont read often but when I started reading this book I couldnt put it down. I read it all in one sitting(on purpose!!!!!!). It was amazing how relatable it was to my life throughout childhood. I will say this connor. You were wrong about one thing in this book.... I did NOT have my phone on me while reading hahaha this was a great read and I love how it wasnt censored and was true to the heart. 5 stars all the way!

Memoirs of a Quarter-lifer

It is really difficult to write a memoir when you are only 23-years-old. So rather than calling this a memoir, I am calling it a collection of tales from Franta's past with allusions to how he might approach what appears to be, heretofore, a very successful future. And he seems to be doing very well for himself: YouTube celeb, owner of a brand, up and coming gay man (who is out publicly) with strong ties to the LGBT community in both California and the rest of the country, and just a genuinely good guy. He is almost too good to be true.

The coincidences I found as I compared my own life to the one he wrote about in his book, is that we have a lot in common. We are both from small towns in the upper Midwest. Both Roman Catholics impelled to attend university at private Catholic colleges. Both gay men trying to make our way in the world in spite of opposition. And the list goes on and on. I would like to meet Connor some day, if only to say that two men who started on similar paths ended up living such disparate lives. Some of us are born for fame, some of us play roles in the background.

Though the book is a quick read and largely represents stories of Connor's past, it kept my attention over Christmas of 2015. I almost feel as if I know him in a strange sort of way. It is not a deep, descriptive knowledge, but more of a cursory introduction to someone I could see myself being very good friends with if we even crossed paths. Definitely worth a read, but don't expect a writing style that is unduly complex or hard to follow. He is young. His writing reflects that youth.

I usually don’t read memoirs or biographies...

Now, I usually don’t read memoirs or biographies or anything like that, but I wanted to try this one out because I watch Connor’s YouTube videos. I am so glad I did.

Connor’s memoir is so intriguing and fascinating, and I enjoyed reading this book so much. I loved his quirky sense of humor in this book, and I loved reading about how he got to where he is. I read about his childhood, his family, his life crises, and his overall thoughts on life so far, and it was amazing. He had so many inspiring quotes and advice about life, friendship, and the overall look at things. For being so young, he certainly has very wise thoughts on how to take on life.

Now, when I got this book, it was Christmas, and I was so excited to read it that I finished it that day in about three hours. I’ve referred to it many times since then, and I always get more out of it every time. I’ve quoted his words many of times with confidence, and I love knowing that I got to know him just a little better since I do still watch his videos every Monday.

I recommend this book to everyone. It shows just how hard life is sometimes, and it gives you some laughs along with it.Connor Franta 3 This book will always be very dear to me, and I’ll read it over and over again just to know that I got absolutely everything out of it.

In this excellent book, London-based contemporary art critic Kent sets out to explain composition?why and how painters divide up the surfaces of their pictures?by looking closely at specific masterpieces. Her very effective selections include well-known works by masters such as Manet, Gainsborough, and Picasso. To describe and illustrate ideas like perspective, color, and narrative, she naturally leans more heavily on representational traditions, but the final few pages of her short book do address more recent experiments with abstraction. Kent's captions are deftly written, and she articulately explains both the conceptual and tangible elements contained within a four-sided work of art. Like previous titles in Dorling Kindersley's extremely useful series (e.g., Sculpture, LJ 11/15/94), Kent's is geared toward the beginning student of painting or art history, and it's easy to imagine this book serving as an invaluable supplementary text for a first-year art history course. Each double-page spread highlights a topic, such as leading the eye, moving the horizon, breaking the frame, and curvilinear compositions. A paragraph discusses the subject, while the full-color reproduction of at least one painting appears twice: first in its entirety, then with details isolated or with superimposed lines pointing out aspects of the composition. Captions give background information on the painting and how it illustrates the main point. A well-designed, informative guide for those who create art, or who simply enjoy looking at pictures. This book is an interesting review of the concepts of artistic composition. It has a very good balance between written explanation and visual examples. The examples are all from master artists of both well known and lesser known stature which helps to keep up interest. I read this book from the local library and later decided that I wanted to own it myself. I think that anyone interested in art would enjoy this book.

About the Author
Irving B. Weiner, PhD, is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and behavioral Medicine at the University of South Florida and former Director of Psychological Services at the University of South Florida Psychiatry Center in Tampa, Florida. He resides in Tampa and is in the practice os clinical and forensic psychology.
Dr. Weiner received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan in 1959. His position since that time have included Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics and Head of the Division of Psychology at the University of Rochester Medical Center; Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at Case Western reserve University; and Vice-President and Chief Academic Officer at the University of Denver and at Fairleigh Dickinson University. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and of the Association for Psychological Science, a Diplomat of the American board of Professional Psycho9logy in both Clinical and Forensic Psychology, and a licensed psychologist in the state of Florida. He is president-elect of the Society of Clinical Psychology (APA Division 12), Past President of the International Rorschach Society, current President of the Society for Personality Assessment Distinguished Contribution Award. He served as editor of the Journal of Personality Assessment from 1985 to 1993 and as editor of Rorschachiana: Yearbook of the International Rorschach Society from 1990 to 1996. Roger L. Greene is a professor at Pacific Graduate School of Psychology in Palo Alto, California, where he served as Director of Clinical Training for twelve years. Dr. Greene has worked in a variety of clinical settings and with different types of patients in his clinical career. His particular area of interest clinically is the assessment and treatment of alcohol and drug abuse. He has written a number of texts and articles on the use of the MMPI-2. His most recent book, The MMPI-2: An Interpretive Manual (2nd ed.) was published in 2000. His books on the MMPI/MMPI-2 have been among the standard references for over two decades. He is�a Fellow of Division 12of APA and the Society for Personality Assessment. He has served on the Board of Trustees and as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Personality Assessment for�the Society of Personality Assessment. Academic mediocrity

With so much choice when it comes to reference manuals on Personality, I was very dissappointed with this one. Dry and uninteresting, there is not much more information than is readily available from manuals (which appear to be the primary source)and there are few new insights or helpful guides to practitioners. As a psychologist who qualified in the 80's I was expecting so much more from the investment. Robert Hogan's book on Personality and the Fate of Organisations, for example, at a fraction of the price and excellent value in each chapter.

As a PsyD student, I am currently at a diagnostic practicum site where personality assessments are frequently administered. This book is my go to when interpreting almost all sef-report measures. It is so useful to have all the information in a single book.

Yuck

How can you take such an interesting subject and make it not only boring but largely unreadable? You would be better off doing online research and getting the manual for the tests and studying them. Of course, this was a required text for my class so I have to read it and I suspect you will too.
