Good with Mecmovies as it's from the same author

Used this book for my Mechanics of Materials class in college. This book is made from the same guy who created the MecMovies site, which is very helpful for homework and studying for tests ( if you don't know MecMovies, just type the name on Google or any search site, and click on the first link to find many interactive diagrams and exercises to help learn the subject). I recommend you use this book with the MecMovies. It is much more comprehensive and better and the book in the same subject written by Gere and Goodno. The problems are fair for the material covered in the chapters, and there's plenty of example problems and exercises to prepare you for the actual homework problems. Its one of the better textbooks I've studied from.

We had a mechanical engineering student in for the summer from one of the local colleges. I assigned him an analysis and he got through it pretty well. He showed me his references, and this was one of them. I marvel at the graphics that are in modern engineering textbooks. They make visualization of a problem much easier I think. The book is expensive, but I bit the bullet because I wanted to review shear flow. It was worth the money to me.

About the Author
Hao Ying is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Wayne State University, after leaving the faculty of University of Texas Medical Branch in 2000. Dr. Ying began fuzzy control research in 1981. In 1987 he established the world's first analytical connection between a fuzzy controller and a conventional controller. In 1989 he developed the world's first clinical fuzzy control application-real-time control of blood pressure. He has been making systematic contributions to analytical issues fundamental to fuzzy control and systems.

Needs to define terms and nomenclature up front and stick with it. Has to be a better book available.

I am using this book in a graduate college class.

The author flows freely from Fuzzy Mathematics (e.g. Fuzzy Set Theory) to Fuzzy Controllers. Each use different letters.

To add to the confusion, yet another set of variables are used to represent the difference between continuous and discrete controllers.

So, you have 4 different sets of nomenclature used. If you are an applications engineer, you only care about one set: discrete controllers.

Not confused enough? The membership function uses the Greek letter mu (looks like the letter "u"), and the input to the controller uses the letter "u". You ~really~ have to stop and think when you are reading the equations. However, I think this is just where standard Fuzzy nomenclature bumps into standard Control Theory nomenclature.

It would have been very helpful to have a diagram of the system up front, with all the variables labeled.

Chapter 7 discusses using Fuzzy Systems to approximate continuous functions. I haven't survived the book to that point yet, but why would you want to do that? The whole reason to use fuzzy logic is to handle discontinuous, and non-linear situations, which cannot be handled by other means. Function approximation can be easily done using Taylor's series, Lagrangians, etc...

I also feel it necessary to add that as a first time reader to the book, who had never read the book before, and who is reading the book for the first time now for the first time.... that there are many places in the book where redundancies are used overly redundantly.

The redundancies are a problem because they add confusion to a difficult subject.

Ex: p29: "Our answer is from the viewpoint of conventional control technology, and it reveals the nature of fuzzy control in relation to conventional control."

There were 14 editors on this book, but it still could have been edited better. (e.g. Editing was a bit fUzZY, and not fussy enough.)

The book provides no example code or software. So, if you want to implement anything, you are on your own. There has to be a better book on Fuzzy Logic around. If there isn't, then there is an opportunity.

Best new book of the year!

OK so I finally have a free moment to write my thoughts on Switching Gears by Rhavensfyre. This wasn't a book, it was a journey. I had reservations buying it at first because I really don't like BDSM story lines and I was afraid this had that, but after some comforting words from the authors and a few of my reader friends I went ahead with the purchase. I am so glad that I did. I was completely hooked on the characters and story line by chapter 2, I literally couldn't put it down. I found myself trying to keep my eyes open to read just "one more chapter" I have seen so many reviews where the reviewer said they identified with Micah. I did see some of myself in Micah's characteristics but really I identified more with Olivia. Having to be the responsible one, the slightly broken yet can't let it really show because I have to take care of my more broken partner one. The strong one. The one that had to walk on eggshells at times for fear of saying the wrong thing and setting off a tsunami of emotion that she was not at all prepared to deal with, and yet the one deeply in love and willing to risk it all for that love to work. I found myself reading Olivia's internal thoughts and saying to myself "yep I know how you feel" This book literally had it all, love, sweetness, romance, danger, emotion, drama, and humor. I as a general rule don't write many amazon reviews on books but I am leaving a 5 star review on this one. It met my needs and surpassed them in every way. Now that I am finished I am actually missing the characters in my daily life. To put it simply, this book was stellar. My sincere thanks to the authors for sharing this story and these characters with us, I only hope to see more of them, (the authors and the characters) in the future. If you haven't bought and started this book already...what the hell are you waiting for??!!! On a scale of 1 to 10 I give it a 100.

Better wear your oven gloves when you read this great story by Rhavensfyre! But it is not just steaming hot, there is a great story with talented and yet flawed characters that had me anxious to spend more time with them. These are real people dealing with real issues You could almost be jealous of Micah, smart, artistic, built and athletic but she has paid a price to be who she is. I look forward to the next book by this talented duo and hopefully a sequel.

Great story, good characterizations, fun read.

This story follows a budding relationship between an older woman and a much younger one. How they get together and the trials they go through to get there make a very interesting book.

I enjoyed this book very much and I think anyone who reads it will enjoy it as well. I look forward to more books by this author.
