Excellent but also difficult

This book is written by a well-known author with many publications and other books. As such, the knowledge content is extremely high, and there are quite a few real-life experiences embedded in the discussion. You will find a lot of good reasons to work through the example problems, and they cover quite a wide range of subjects, though the predominant theme is focused on heat transfer. There are many other steam plant subjects not addressed.

On the negative side, the method of presenting the calculations is somewhat difficult to use. The great majority of calculations are presented in a numerical equation, rather than in variable-substitution form. As a result, you are constantly flipping pages to figure out where each number comes from. Hint: Dr. Ganapathy has derived the equations used in this book in a companion book, "Applied Heat Transfer." If you use both books simultaneously, you'll have a much better chance of tracing the flow of problems solved in this book.

Personal preference: this book uses English units (I prefer SI). As a result, nearly every equation has a units-matching constant factor embedded in it. For example, many equations mix inches and feet, so you'll find factors of 12 sitting around to compensate. These conversion factors just appear on their own, so you have to expect them. I find this annoying, but apparently people in this industry are used to this and reluctant to change. (sigh.)

Summary: this book is worth the effort, but the effort will be considerable. However, I found the examples chosen to be more realistic and thorough than those used in many other books on this subject.

It is a good book if you want some fundamentals and worked examples pertaining to steam plants. Some examples are basic (which is a good thing for new engineers) and some are more complicated. we were fortunate enough to get a copy of this for our office and have used it quite a bit. Worth having a copy if you can get your hands on it.

Rosalind B. Penfold, Dragonslippers: This Is What an Abusive Relationship Looks Like (Black Cat, 2005)

This is a stunning book.

Rosalind Penfold has created a piece of art that outlines, in the starkest and most blunt terms, domestic abuse. She drew most of it during a ten-year abusive relationship, and drawing in, or just after, the moment lends this book an immediacy, a power that cannot be overstated. Ninety, perhaps ninety-five, percent of it would land it at the top of my year's-best list. Rosalind Penfold's relationship is the stuff nightmares are made of, and she has done a perfect job of translating it into a nightmare that those of us who have thankfully never experienced these horrors can still identify with.

This makes the other five percent of the book-- all of it within the final few pages-- the more puzzling. It is when Penfold is out of the relationship and going through therapy, on the healing journey, where things fall apart. After the brutal, straightforward detail that comprises the bulk of the manuscript, life after the relationship is glossed over at best. Given the target audience, an argument can be made that this is, in fact, the most important section of the book, and it's neglected.

How minor a nit this is to pick depends on how important the reader feels it is that Penfold instruct the abused partner in what to do after getting out of the relationship. While I have to admit that the rather gaping hole in the narrative does nag at me, after mulling it over, it seems to me that the value there is to be found in the rest of the book well outweighs the problems with the end of it. The most important question to ask when judging a book is often "does it effectively get its point across without sacrificing its artistic integrity?" During the depiction of the relationship itself, Penfold succeeds perhaps better than any other writer about abuse ever has. A landmark achievement. It probably won't top my year's-best list, but it's a pretty good chance it will show up in the top ten. **** �

Powerful

"Dragonslippers" is terrifying. I put the book down feeling completely drained and angry. Angry that the author had to endure what she did and angry for the decisions she made and angry that the man seemed to get away with it. But this, as the subtitle suggests, is what an abusive relationship looks like. People don't always extricate themselves from situations when they should, there isn't always a happy ending of redemption and just desserts.

The spare artwork tells the story perfectly, especially in one terrifying moment when Penfold (not her real name) uses a gray wash to illustrate a dinner table blowup; my heart leaped and I wanted to rush into the story and save Penfold and thwart the evil dragon that was her boyfriend Brian. The lesson of this story, of course, is that there were no heroes and Penfold had to rescue herself; it took an impossibly long time but she does end up in a better place.

I have a few minor issues with the book: one is that the font used is rather ugly. I know this sounds silly but it makes the book look like a clinic hand-out rather than a personal tale. Another quibble is that somehow the first meeting between Penfold and Brian is either deleted or was never drawn. Penfold goes to a party, sits by the pool and this big guy (Brian) grabs her and jumps in the pool as she shouts, "You again?!" Again? When was there a before? I kept looking to see if the pages were misnumbered or stuck together but no, the first glimpse of Brian is never included. That's a curious omission.

Penfold's book should be read by everyone and I hope it is read by people in such situations who will recognize themselves and realize they need to do something before it's too late. A-.

I had a look and is good as well

I ask for "Making Dolls" by S. Reinckens, instead of this book I got
"Making Waldorf Dolls" by Maricristin Sealey.
Well, I had a look and is good as well, just a different way to present the making of the dolls .
The first one has more photography, real good if you are the kind of more visual person.
While the second one has only drawings.
I find both of them very good.

Wonderful, with a few exceptions

Ms. Reinckens' book on making Waldorf style dolls and puppets possesses a wealth of creative ideas. From chapters on creating the doll's head, face and body to mending a well played with doll and making a hobby horse , this little book packs a lot into its 56 pages. I enjoyed the colorful pictures, descriptions and ideas for making various dolls, however, I was a little disappointed with the patterns and instructions included. For example: In one part of the book she gives instructions for making a medium-sized doll, but fails to mention its proportions. Although I eventually was able to figure out what they were, it took a lot of time an effort on my part, searching through other chapters in order to find them. Despite minor problems, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A must for anyone interested in doll-making.

Lots of good ideas

This book gives many good ideas for variations on the Waldorf doll theme. (It was this book that gave me the idea that the doll's torso and legs can be made from colorful fabric, and voila--the doll is dressed in a vest and tights already.)

Most of the dolls in this book have a nose; it seems European Waldorf dolls more often have noses, while American ones don't! Also, most of these dolls have painted features. Of course you can choose to embroider the features if you prefer.

If you've never made a Waldorf doll, this book's instructions are not the clearest. But if you are familiar with the method, or have a kit or pattern to start with, this book is well worth looking at.

A Real funny keeper

Chesnie Cosgrove gets a job working for Joel Davenport, and the fun starts, Joel keeps Chesnie busy on so she can't see other men, then when he sees he can have a possition in the family company he works for he takes Chesnie as his wife, only Chesnie doesn't think Joel loves her as much as she loves, him.
Joel soon shows Chesnie over and over again the deep love he has for her and she responds in like manor. This is one romantic book, and funny. Hot, but good.If you liked this book you'll like Eva Rutland, Susan Fox, Rebecca Winters, Helen Brooks, the late Essie Summers, and the late great Betty Neels.

Hot, Smart...and then some... Wow!

The third book of the KAGE trilogy puts a luscious cherry atop what is one of the most riveting male/male romance series that I have ever read. If you have not read these books, run, don’t walk, and get them. You will not be disappointed. Mixed martial arts fighter Kage is the ultimate mix of alpha, intrigue, and hotness, and college cutie Jamie is the personification of luscious boy-next-door with pluck. When these two laid eyes on each other sparks ignited and author Maris Black fanned the resulting flame into a fiery inferno of profound romance that is hotter than a Molotov cocktail. I could do nothing but keep turning the pages, muttering “Duh-am…”

This latest book finds Kage and Jamie confronting Kage’s personal demons and outing themselves to Jamie’s family and friends. The events are not without complications as Kage’s villainous uncle finally shows his true face. I’m not one to write spoilers so I’ll just speak on what makes this book just as sensational and dizzyingly perfect as the previous two.

For one, the pacing is dynamic; there are no wasted words. From the dialogue through the mesmerizing behind-the-scene glimpses of the world of MMA fighting, each episode contained the appropriate amount of stimulation to make my heart rev a little faster with anticipation. Events play out at a good clip, but grant Kage and Jamie plenty of time to convey a full range of believable emotions that made me love these well-developed characters even more.

Secondly, all of the love scenes are just that, love scenes. From the lust-induced, rock hard, visceral sex scenes to the couple’s playful teasing encounters, the language and events are doused in the sweetness of romance. This is lovemaking at its best… Kage and Jamie were falling deeply in love and with each scintillating scene I felt privileged to experience their joy. And perhaps that’s the secret of this series’ success…you get to experience falling in love again and again.

And lastly, kudos to the author for getting the nuances of the fight game correct and showing restraint in sharing overmuch. Excellent research and skillful information weaving translated into wonderful vignettes of color that put a lovely stamp of masculinity on the story and added a tangible blood-sweat-and-bone note that is the true essence of the fight game. Grounded in authentic details, a fighter’s diet, making weight for a fight, the press conferences, and the adrenaline overload, the love story of Kage and Jamie plays out beautifully and the end is to-die-for. This is definitely a not to be missed story and series. I almost envy a new-to-the-series reader’s awaiting journey, but—yet another gift—the books are eminently rereadable!

Ahhhh! That ending! I am in love all over again with this series. Kage you are a boss! I loved that last chapter so much! There is no way that I can see it as the ending when really it was an epic beginning!

Now, there were some parts that were totally sad to read. I cannot imagine what Kage must have felt, about everything he went through in life. He is such a strong man to be able to just keep living and doing what he loves (including Jamie lol) to know he was manipulated so badly by his uncle was surreal. How could a man be so horrible to his nephew? To control him in every aspect, to try and force him to live a life of unhappiness just because it didn't fit with his plan was sickening. I was so glad when he was out of the picture.

Jamie as always was so adorable, I was happy to read how comfortable he was with Kage now that they were finally reunited how they were supposed to be. Daddy Atwood still takes the cake as my favourite family member. And I was so happy to read that Daddy Atwood gave Kage the "talk" .... Sigh how adorable.

Now I just want to read about them all married with kids, or dogs or even gold fish. Their lives are really only now beginning and I am so happy for them. At the end of this book, it definitely put a smile on my face (after the roller coaster of emotions that is lol) I loved it. 5 beautiful stars!

Wow....

Wow. This went somewhere I didn't expect. Put all three books together and it's an intense action movie. Couldn't put it down and I'm still processing some of it, kind of can't believe parts of it. At the center, though, remains Jamie and Kage and their obsessive need and love for each other. Leaves you breathless.
