the best book published to date for our specialty

Hands down, the best book published to date for our specialty. Only wished it was released years ago, before I wasted so much money on other books in our specialty. No other book is even close to representing the information contained in this masterpiece. The diagrams & pictures are so detailed, a monkey could follow the instructions. Pure genius. If you don't own this book, you are wrong. A must have addition to your knowledge library.

VERY GOOD ATLAS FOR OUR SPECIALTY

The text is excellent. Well written and concise with outstanding diagrams and photos . It weighs about 20 lbs. It is available on Kindle but it's another $300 plus. I feel that it should be available on your personal Kindle if you purchased the hardback. That is the only reason for 4 stars. I would have given it 5 stars but for over $300, the Kindle version should be available at no extra cost. It's an "at home book". I will update once I have read more of the book and/or if I have made an error and am indeed permitted to use the Kindle version. The other option would have been to make it a 2 or even a 3 volume set as a 6 to 7 lb book is easy enough to tote.

best book I have found. Pictures are amazing. The format is a step-by-step layout which I find the best way to learn, especially when reviewing surgeries prior to going to the OR. I find myself making my notes in a step-wise manner and this book nails it. Would highly recommend this.

About the Author
Born in Chicago, Tom Trinko has lived a deprived life, never once having butchered a hog. In an attempt to improve the quality of life in Chicago, he pursued his higher education in Pasadena, California, at Cal Tech. He moved to Wisconsin for the better climate and picked up his PhD in physics, graduating with the official title of mad scientist. His first smart move was marrying a woman who worked at Apple and who had an Apple IIe. With that, he was able to extend his professional programming career, which began in 1972, to home computers. His long-suffering wife brought a Mac home in 1984, which marked the start of Tom’s enthusiasm for the only OS for people who want to get work done. He’s ordered the Mac around in Basic, Forth, C, Pascal, and about a billion or so scripting languages. Back when Apple didn’t know any better, he did contract work for Apple’s Developer University. In real life, he works on other platforms, ranging from supercomputers to UNIX workstations, which continually remind him of how spiffy the Mac really is. His current main objective in life is staying more computer literate than his kids.

I didn't learn anything from this book.

By "covering" Excel and Filemaker they mean two short pages.

First line of first example drew syntax error. (2004 edition)

Fanning the pages, the excel example caught my eye and I typed it into script editor and tried to save it to ScriptingAdditions, the default location. It locked me up with a SBOD and a cryptic message about the first line of code. SYNTAX ERROR: A tell can't go after this number. I tried several numbers. Where is Tom to explain? I looked around and could not find him or an explanation. Bad luck. Yup. I think AppleScript for dummies is not for me. Maybe AppleScript is not for me. I'll try another book sometime. Certainly doesn't "save you time" so far.

Even At Times Lame Humor Helps

As a person with rudimentary programming experience (I've taken basic courses in Pascal and C) I'm finding Mr. Trinko's book helpful. The criticism that his injecting bits of humor interferes with learning AppleScript doesn't resonate with me. While not every pun evokes a grin, they take up only a fraction of a second of reading time, and they lighten the task of learning a complex technical skill.

I have no way to judge whether Trinko's approach is poorly organized or not, but the pace of learning and exposure to new topics seems to me smooth and continuous. When he pops in a concept that won't be fully explained until later in the text, he warns the reader. He also reminds the reader where to look back in previous chapters to review a particular idea that has become important again in the discussion.

I find the book a welcome companion. Whether I'll become proficient at AppleScript after having finished it is another matter. I bought this book, assuming that it is a low-level introductory guide, and not a fully fleshed out handbook for developers. I would expect to go on to study more sophisticated presentations that contain expanded reference resources.

Meanwhile, I'm having fun with AppleScript for Dummies.

Gem of a translation

In the distant past Giordano Bruno penned in Latin "De Umbris Idearum & Ars Memoriae” (On The Shadows of Ideas & The Art of Memory), a complete dissertation on the philosophy of our memories and how to better memorize items. Translator, Scott Gosnell, has given us an excellent modern day translation of this 16th century text. The life of Bruno could be an entire volume, but Gosnell has provided an appropriately brief introduction to the lasting effects the life of Giordano Bruno, and the importance of this text, has had on the past 500 years of history without being overwhelming.

Bruno presented and formalized the idea of using a sequence of visualizations, such as mentally walking through a room, and using the mental visualizations to help in the recall of information. Bruno’s command of this ability ultimately led to his persecution and execution, but the implications of this practice are so far reaching that the reader is most likely already familiar with the basics of the ideas presented in the second half of the book, The Art of Memory. The ideas in this text are as valuable today as they were centuries before.

This modern day translation reads like old Latin at times and the thought process behind the text is from a dedicated academic. This is no tome of light reading – it is on the same level as higher level text books and pulls no punches when assuming the capabilities of the reader. It is not completely esoteric though and should be accessible to most capable readers. While this is a translation, it is obvious Scott Gosnell has kept true to the feel and rhythm of the original text without venturing into undue creative license.

This is must read for any intellectual, but it is likewise a must read for anyone interested in improving their memory and ability of informational recall.

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK!!!

As academic philosopher familiar with the works of Giordano Bruno, I can tell you that the translation is absolutely horrific and simply does not hold up to ANY acceptable standard for good translation. The text is UNREADABLE. Syntax is skewed, word-choice is nonsensical. The text does not convey meaning whatsoever.

If you want to understand what level this translation is at, then cut some Latin text and paste it into Google translate and you'll get the idea...

A good reference, no more no less.

Honestly if you are looking into buying this book take a look at O'Reilly's "Webmaster in a nutshell" before you buy this. The information in here is pretty much a repeat of everything in there, only the Webmaster book contains a lot more valuable and exstensive knowlege base in regards to not just PHP. If you just want a simple, small reference with information that is readily available for free on the web then you may find this useful, otherwise don't bother. I have to give it some credit because the book dosen't claim to be any more than it is and it is pretty inexpensive.

Pretty lame

Well, for starters: there's no index. How did that slip through the cracks? Since the functions are grouped by type, you need to know what the function is before you can look up what it is, or just flip through 114 pages scanning for it, which leads to problem number 2: the typography is such that the function names blend right into the text.
The function reference identifies what is returned by the functions by data type (e.g., integer), but not whether it's a pointer to an array or just a number, or what. The Leon Atkinson book, otherwise even lamer than this book, at least got that part right.
Advice to O'Reilly: give up on the pretense of always having the "preeminent expert" write your books. Get professional technical writers, partner them with the big name "creators" of the technology, and the quality and timeliness of the books will improve. Thank god Larry Wall didn't write the Perl book. O'Reilly doesn't have the field all to itself anymore, so they shouldn't be resting on their laurels.

Out of date & needing improvement

O'Reilly must sell a ton of these. Why not get a new author willing to do a good job of updating and improving. We all owe Lerdorf a lot for starting PHP in the first place. Having said that, O'Reilly needs to get an author who can update this and make it a useful reference. PHP is now on version 5.2 and this book is on version 4. It is nearly useless. I try to use this book from time to time, but never seem to find the information I need. Ie: Each function in the reference section needs at least two sentences of explanation, not a half sentence.

PHP needs a couple of good current reference books. Where are they?

Each day is a new scripture and thought to think about. Enjoying it so far. You can start at any time -- it is not dated -- although it starts on Sunday so I did too. It would be helpful to have the weeks labeled -- like week 1, week 2 -- I think, instead of one long stream of 365 days.
