About the Author

Jack Ketchum is the pseudonym for a former actor, singer, teacher, literary agent, lumber salesman, and soda jerk––a former flower child and baby boomer who figures that in 1956 Elvis, dinosaurs and horror probably saved his life. His first novel, Off Season, prompted the Village Voice to publicly scold its publisher in print for publishing violent pornography. He personally disagrees but is perfectly happy to let you decide for yourself. His short story The Box won a 1994 Bram Stoker Award from the HWA, his story Gone won again in 2000––and in 2003 he won Stokers for best collection for Peaceable Kingdom and best long fiction for Closing Time. He has written eleven novels, three of which have recently been made into feature films––The Lost, The Girl Next Door, and Red. His stories are collected in The Exit At Toledo Blade Boulevard, Broken on the Wheel of Sex, Peaceable Kingdom, Sleep Disorder (with Edward Lee) and Closing Time and Other Stories. His novella The Crossings was cited by Stephen King in his speech at the 2003 National Book Awards. King has also called him “the scariest man in America” in Entertainment Weekly. He believes King is wrong on this and that the scariest man in America lives across the Potomac.

How Short Stories Are Supposed To Be Written

When one gets to know an author through his or her fiction, one comes to expect a certain sameness or familiarity in their work, a comfortable foundation on which they will build a new, but not entirely unfamiliar story. With Ketchum, one must only expect a well written story, because that is the only similarity you are going to get. He has written so broadly and so well over the years, and this collection is the highlight of a brilliant, if somewhat underappreciated, career. It collects most of his short fiction, contains a few stories exclusive to this edition, and reprints all but two stories from his earlier and long out of print collection The Exit At Toledo Blade Boulevard. If you get the Subterranean Press limited edition, you will find some artwork to two of the stories, if you get the Leisure edition, you will find a new afterword. I recommend them both. Some of these stories will make you laugh, some will make you cry, some will leave you stunned. The range of this author far outshines any other, and you can't go wrong with this book.

Woah!

This book is worth the price alone for the story titled MAIL ORDER, which is one of the best short horror tales I've read in years (think a more demented version of the film 8MM). Kethcum shines with this collection, and the few non-horror tales (plus a western) all keep the readers' interest. Horror fans will eat this up. The thirty-two tales fly by.

Sometimes the lamb eats the lion

Truly a phenomenal anthology, I buzzed through Ketchum's collection like a goose through a field of June-bugs, smacking my lips at every tasty morsel.

There are thirty-two stories here in this collection, way to many to give even the briefest of synopsis for each, but trust me when I say that Ketchum runs a gamut here from realism to surrealism straight through the ethereal and on into the pits of hell itself. Yummy.

A Mother sees her ten year old son for the monster he is, a mysterious empty box that leaves death in its wake, parrots and body-painting in a haunted bar, the unbreakable melding of minds with twins, a dying author's last wish, new methods of gentlemen's justice, just to skim a few teasers.

Of special mention are the tales "Meagan's Law", a horrifying look at a real life monster that twists your views around; "The Great San Diego Sleazy Bimbo Massacre", a brutal and hilarious tale of two barflys and an unwanted husband; "The Rose", in which a tattoo artist frees a slave; and "Lines: Or Like Franco, Is Elvis Still Dead", a realistically scary tale of Fatal Attraction.

Ketchum has proven in this collection that he not only writes well, but can cross whatever genre he chooses successfully. Wild, weird, wonderful, horrific, and even inspiring, this is a must-have for you anthology collection.

good basic reading

this is an excellent book for the basics involved in midwifery. it is relevant to midwives, nurses, all medical staff really and is set at an understandable level. i have used this book for alot of references to both patient questions and own personal interests.

Mayes Midwifery

This is an excellent textbook for those studying to be midwives. It is well set out with easy to read information about all aspects of midwifery. Although written for English midwives the knowledge it shares is relevant to midwives from around the world (buyer studied midwifery in New Zealand). This is also much cheaper than buying from a university book store.

Fairly comprehensive but "Lite" overview.

This is a fairly comprehensive overview of loudspeakers. It's mostly a collection of information from other sources - especially JBL where the author worked - and lot of it is of interest and some of it is hard to find elsewhere. It's well worth a read by an enthusiast. But there's not much depth and it seems a bit careless. It lost a star because it had a few too many inconsistent constants, incorrect units and similar errors for it's considerable price.

This is a great book for a person who is intersted in the math and technical aspects of speaker design. I used this book as a refernce while working on my senior thesis and it proved very helpful. This is not a book for beginners.

Fondness for accurancy (and cleverness) is appreciated

I'm going to say up front that I've met and talked to this artist so anyone who wants to see this as biased, knock yourself out. Bear in mind I've met and spoken with a lot of the people I've reviewed in the past, like Frank Frazetta and Scott Hampton as well as Art Suydam. I get around.
The facts are that more art instruction books should be this accessable. The lesson are clear and very innovative. There are wonderful examples in this book that are presented in a clear way and easily understood. Even an old artist like myself is learning some new tricks from this book (the example of bone landmarks, for instance, is known but only through experience and here it's pointed out early and easy to grasp as well as an essential understanding of anatomy often overlooked). I have a lot of drawing books because I'm also an instructor. I wish I had this book a few years ago when teaching an anatomy drawing class.
All new and aspiring artist who want to work in comics, illustration or digital graphics applied to gaming should have this book on their shelves. It teaches clear and easy to follow instructions regarding figure balancing, motion, weighted stances, perspective, facial profiles... the works and all in abbreviated, clever examples. This is not the end all of drawing books and the emphasis is on drawing people from form to physical interaction in the image, but this is an excellent primer, perhaps the best I've ever seen.

The book loses a star because of how hard it is to attain and also because of it's limited distribution it costs more than comparable books on the same or related subjects.

However, there's no doubt that this book should have a place on any artist's book shelf along with Jack Hamm's wonderful drawing books and George Bridgman's anatomy studies.

Buy it from the artist- but buy it!

This is a really great book about techniques for drawing the figure from your imagination. Anyone interested in depicting the figure for illustration, comics or fine art should own it. But the price here is crazy! Go to Mike Hoffman's website and buy it from the man himself for under $25! Also check out the painting instruction DVD he has there as well as TONS of books he has available. The man is a creative dynamo! If you've grown up, as I did, on Jack Hamm, George Bridgeman and Burne Hogarth there are things Mike shows you that are revelatory! They are also inspirational. Go to the man and buy it! And while you're at it, shoot him an e mail- despite a lot of negative comments from ignorant jerks, he's an incredibly nice guy, full of helpful suggestions and encouragement to fledgling artists.

Hoffman’s figure drawings come to life and are solid examples of a trained artist.

Secrets of Drawing by Mike Hoffman has an array of knowledge that goes beyond the how-to styled books. The content page was the first sign that this how-to book leaves no drawing theory untouched. I was excited to see nearly a hundred disciplines of cardinal drawing techniques, (balance, contrast, etc.) as well as fresh lessons like ‘flipping’ and ‘improvised lighting.’

I was always interested in how-to illustrate books as a child. Hoffman’s book has many helpful hints that span all ages and skill levels. I never felt that I was beyond the lessons, as there is something to take away with each one. The book lets one learn techniques at their own pace.

Hoffman helps the reader build a foundation on the style of their choosing. He shows step by step alterations that touch on correct anatomy as well as the imperfections of the human form. Hoffman's examples are beautiful, fun to look at, and in great detail. The lessons utilize different media (oil, paint, pencil, photo) that are refreshing to see blended together. He uses shapes and arrows to give the lessons movement and character, as well as tips and tricks to heighten effects. Some tips are common anatomical errors, and others are theory and concept of art that have been discussed for ages. I enjoy at times Hoffman mentions influences and encourages readers to research. He promotes personal well-being as a tool to better oneself as an artist.

Hoffman’s drawings come to life and are solid examples of a trained artist. He makes interesting connection to the body and the rest known universe. He goes through most body parts/sections to create a lifelike subject. That being said; the only thing I noticed that could be misleading is the title. Though many of the lessons could be applied to any drawing subject, this book is mainly about figure drawing.

I recommend Secrets of Drawing to all artists of all ages. This book could be used as a helpful teaching tool, as each lesson has a title and explanation. Either to build a foundation on drawing or eager artists looking to polish their style. It’s not every day that an artist see’s things clearer, this book certainly opened doors, and leveled up my power of illustration. I encourage this to anyone that has the interest in drawing figures as well as learning new technique and style from an experience artist.
