Gerard Brault’s 1984 student edition of La Chanson de Roland has become a standard text in classrooms. This new revised edition contains a new preface and makes significant improvements to both the text and the bibliography. The text and a line-by-line prose translation are printed on facing pages. Brault’s editing of the Oxford text includes corrections of the scribe’s obvious errors and new readings of garbled or partially obliterated words, and his translation achieves both elegance and accuracy. This new edition pays special attention to the consistency of Saracen proper names. The introduction places La Chanson de Roland in the context of the French epic tradition, Charlemagne’s Spanish campaign of 778, the legend of Roland, and the linguistic and literary issues raised by the Oxford text. Among the topics covered are the relation between history and myth, the epic’s reflection of prevailing social beliefs and values at the time of its composition (about 1100), and the literary devices employed by the unknown author. The introduction concludes with a note about special problems in editing and translating the Oxford text. An annotated and updated bibliography introduces leading works relating to La Chanson de Roland.

A good introduction to category theory

I am the author's grad student so my rating may be biased. Nonetheless I would recommend the book as a comprehensive and well-written intro to category theory. There is a wealth of examples and exercises to motivate discussion and add depth to the material.

Dragons--fiction or fact?

Some time back a library student asked me for a book about dragons. As our library did not have any, I found one with illustrations by a prominent children's artist. However, when it came in, I was aghast. Too much sexual reference for upper elementary students! While I don't practice censorship, I do try to exhibit good sense.

So imagine my delight when our book fair company brought this book in for our last fair. "Dragons: Fearsome Monsters for Myth and Fiction" is exactly what I was seeking for this boy. He was thrilled with the book.

There are several reasons why this is a good dragon book:
1. The reading level is appropriate for the 9-12 age grouping.
2. Each two-page spread of each dragon contains
*a full-page illustration,
*a comparative illustration with man to show size,
*a map of country of origin and story,
*an illustration depicting one scene of the dragon in action, and
*a list of factoids.

The introduction points out that dragons may be entirely mythical based on mistaken identity (discovery of dinosaur bones could have led to speculation about dragons). However, there have been credible witnesses to dragons: Marco Polo during his travels and Leonardo da Vinci drew them.

Whatever the case--myth, fiction, or reality--the dragons in this book have captured the imagination. Some of the dragons included are Beowulf's dragon, Krak of Poland (Krakow is named after him), the dragon from the St. George story, the story of Maud and the Wyvern in England, Fafnir of Scandinavian fame immortalized in Wagner's opera "Siegfried," both Glaurung and Smaug of Lord of the Rings.

Also included are dragons from Pakistan, China, Russia, Japan, Canary Islands, Libya, as well as fictional stories.

Even though Amazon lists several other dragon books, I cannot speak for them. I can speak for this book. It is appropriate, interesting, informative, and entertaining. The only reason I am deducting one star is that it is out of print. And I don't know why. It doesn't make sense.

It's a good book with lots of great artwork and includes awesome action pictures and facts about different dragons from ancient legends, myths, and media dragons. It has many dragons (20 in count) all with information boxes and Did you know facts. It has dragons like the Hungarian Horntail, the Wyvern, and Jawzahr.

Still grateful for this life-changing book after 5 years

I thought I would mention that it has been over 5 years since I first read this book, since that would likely be relevant to those reading this review. But I know that the transformation I experienced from reading this book, and my gratefulness for it, will be with me forever.

This book was my first introduction to Osho. A freshman in college at the time, I was in the midst of a serious spiritual exploration. I had recently read a number of books from the Conversations With God series, which are amazing, but which were ironically acting as a sort of dogma for me. I went around preaching the lessons from those books (overtly or otherwise) and was totally convinced that I was on the spiritual path that was right for me -- and even, dare I say, that I had at least some of the "answers." But there was something about those books that bothered me -- if having a conversation with God was something we were all supposed to be able to experience, why wasn't I experiencing it, and why didn't I feel the books were helping me to do so (in spite of their insistence that this was possible)?

I had no idea that I had become closed-minded, and that Conversations With God was serving as a religion for me--one that taught love and moved far beyond conventional religion--but a religion that was nonetheless limiting.

This book blew me away. After reading it cover to cover, I realized what truth is really about. Our ideas about what truth is, our prior beliefs, the entirety of what our culture teaches us about spirituality--are all irrelevant if they are not grounded in actual awareness and experience. This "idea" is much harder to grasp than it seems. I don't think anything else at the time could have managed to break me out of my way of thinking. I thought I was open to any and all spiritual ideas. It was only Osho who truly opened my mind, heart, and being. If you organize your life around a set of intellectual beliefs, however uplifting, this book will set you free and put you back in touch with your heart, and your intuition.

One reviewer said she thought this book was awful because she was struggling with her faith, and the book only made her doubts greater. But that is the whole point of Osho--to make you question everything until you are truly free to see the truth for yourself, without all of that so-called "knowledge" from the past clouding your vision.

To be more specific, this book changed my life in part because it made me realize that my real passion is music. So, instead of continuing to move in the direction of a career in web development, where music would have been relegated to just a hobby, I switched my major to a degree that also included music, and now I am enrolled in a masters program in music composition. I will always be grateful for Osho, who I feel pushed me in this direction at a young age, rather than just being another person who sacrificed his dreams for the sake of practical and monetary concerns. Anyone who wants to live their dreams more fully would benefit from reading this book.

More importantly, this book opened me up to the whole world of Osho, which is truly vast--I am sure there is a gem for everyone somewhere in his works. I have to issue a caveat--you should be careful not to read Osho too literally. The important thing is the message.

In spite of (or perhaps because of) being a book about moving beyond the intellect, "Intuition" revolutionized my whole way of thinking. I have come to the point where I don't even believe anything that Osho says unless it rings true in my own experience--and that is really saying something.

We live in a world where people will hate--or even kill--as a result of a belief that is not even authentically their own; one that they learned from a book, or from their religion or culture (atheists are not excluded from this, by the way). I now see the world more clearly than ever before. And on every level, Osho has helped put me in contact with a much deeper wisdom within myself than I had ever known before--my own.

It is for this wisdom that I am truly grateful.

Approaching the Unity Beyond Reason

This is an excellent book. It's a perfect complement to his AWARENESS. There is no one way to express the awareness of a sage. Different sages use different words as pointers to the ineffable. The one wonderful truth cannot be captured verbally or conceptually, but it can be directly experienced as emptiness, intuition, shunyata, nirvana. Intuition starts "when reason is exhausted." Nevertheless, we need words and concepts to point us in the right direction and that's what this book does.

Profound for the modern times and mind!

An excellent look into intuition, intelligence and the mind. The duality as discussed by Osho is deep and worthy of diving into --It's a shame there is such a disconnect with the heart of matters and I loved Osho's brilliant example of how that disconnect plays out between a lovely haiku poem and the active, intellectual poetry of Tennyson. Osho drives his point home that we need to seek and lead with the heart through direction rather than mind, which strives for a restricted destination. Wow! Just wow!
